About the Adobe Help Manager in CS6

The Adobe Help manager is an AIR-based content installation utility that downloads offline help content and notifies you when new updates are available, ensuring that you always have the most up-to-date and accurate reference information from Adobe.

This utility, previously known as the Community Help application, features the following major changes:

Online help content can be displayed in your default web browser (Internet Explorer, Safari, Chrome, Firefox, etc.). NOTE - you must first choose this option in the help application preferences, then quit the help application and choose help again in your application.

The Help Manager will download either HTML or PDF reference content, depending on which file is the most recent.

You can then view this content offline, either via your web browser or via Adobe Acrobat Reader (or similar PDF viewing software).

You can dismiss or disable notifications entirely via the Help Manager preferences.

Viewing online help content

When you launch help from any CS6 application, the default web browser will launch with the appropriate product help content displayed. NOTE - only if you have set the help application preference to do so.

You can then use your browser’s native functionality to search, bookmark, comment, or rate the content.

Downloading offline help content

The first time you launch Help from your Adobe CS6 application, the Adobe Help manager launches in the background and checks for the availability of new or updated content.

If no new content is available, the application will shut down until the next time you select Help.

If new content is found, a small pop-up notification will be displayed on your desktop, usually in the lower-right corner of your screen.

When you click on the notification message, the Help Manager will launch and show you all of the help content that is available for download in the Local Content preferences.

You can select individual packages by highlighting the desired product or help package title and clicking on the Update button.

To update all of the content that is available, select the ‘Download’ button on the General preferences pane. Note: the total download size for all of the applicable content is displayed – large updates may take several minutes or more to download.

During this download, you may continue to browse and search Help content with your web browser.

If you prefer to have your Adobe applications use the local, installed help files by default, select “Display local help content only’ in the General preferences tab.

Or you can simply choose to continue viewing online content and the Help Manager will automatically switch to offline help if Internet access is no longer available.

Verify the assets used are available on disk, then update the article.]. Everything was working fine perfectly just the other day when all I did was preview it in InDesign. I can't think of anything that I could have done to ruin it. All my links appear to be fine, and so far I've gone through and stripped most of the document to find the problem but it won't work unless I take out 99 percent of the document. It seems to have multiple issues and appears to be an entire corrupted document rather than just a few issues with MSOs. The document consists of five pages with vertical and horizontal layouts and I have slideshows, scrollable frames, and multi-state objects but no audio.

Adobe Help Manager - troubleshoot error codes

Hi - the Help team has published a new knowledgebase document that covers why some users are seeing various error codes when attempting to access offline help. The document is available here: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/help-manager-troubleshoot-error-codes.html

I am cross-posting the content here as well.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------

Problem

Adobe Creative Suite 6 customers who have not downloaded offline content for their CS6 applications may experience confusing or inconsistent error messages when attempting to access Help offline.

Solution

Offline help PDFs for CS6 will be available in June 2012. Once the Help PDFs have been downloaded via the Help Manager utility, all invocations for Help will function normally. In the meanwhile, placeholder PDFs can be downloaded from the Help Manager. This will resolve the error codes that customers see until the final PDFs are available.

To download the placeholder PDFs, open the Adobe Help utlity from the Applications folder. Once the utlity has launched, click the Download button in the General Settings preferences pane.

Once the interim PDFs have been downloaded, the Help Manager will unzip the files and place them in the proper directory. This process may take a few minutes depending on the size of the download and the number of PDFs that have been installed.

You may now quit or exit the Help Manager. The next time you launch Help and you do not have an Internet connection, the appropriate product PDF file will open in Adobe Reader or similar PDF-rendering software. You may also choose to view the PDF by default by changing the "Display Local Help content only" preference to "Yes." For details, see the same screenshot above.

When the final PDF Help files are delivered in June 2012, you will receive a notification from the Help Manager letting you know that updated PDFs are now ready for download. Simply repeat the Download process to update the content to your local computer.

Sample error codes

Adobe InDesign CS6

Error message: Adobe Help Viewer is not installed and you are not connected to the Internet.
CS6: Adobe Help Manager - PDF download/extraction error

Hi - we have received several reports through this forum that some users are encountering an issue when downloading Help reference PDFs through the Adobe Help Manager in CS6.

Problem: Although the application appears to be downloading the Help content, the application hangs during the 'extraction' phase of the process. Further, when users check in their shared documents folder, the PDF files are actually present and unzipped as expected.

Solution: the application database files and/or corrupt configuration files are likely at fault. To resolve the issue, please delete the following two directories.

Delete the following directory:

Windows: %appdata%/chc.4875E02D9FB21EE389F73B8D1702B320485DF8CE.1

Tip: To find this directory in Windows, copy the preceding phrase into the Windows Explorer file manager.

Mac OS: /[user name]/Library/Preferences/chc.4875E02D9FB21EE389F73B8D1702B320485DF8CE.1

Tip: To find this directory on Mac OSX 10.7, open the Terminal application and enter the following: "chflags nohidden ~/Library/” and execute.

And delete this directory too:

Windows : C:\Users\Public\Documents\Adobe\ (Help and PDF directories within)

Mac : \Users\Shared\Documents\Adobe (Help and PDF directories within)

Then simply restart the Help Manager and restart the download process.

The engineering team is continuing to investigate the root cause but the steps above should resovle the issue for the majority of users. Thanks for your patience while we continue to investigate.

When you go to the help in any Adobe program, you are taken to a page that has the list of contents, but the search field, instead of being the obvious and logical choice of searching the help like in every other software in the world, has ONE search field that says "Adobe Community Help", which might be of service at some point, but why would they only put this search field and not one to search the actual help documents? It's just absurd.

The help application does not work; the omly thing that it will display is the settings window. After downloading local content and clicking done, the window disappears, but when you click on the application icon, it again reappears. Simply put, I cannot view the help at all in the Help application, even though I have set it up to always use local content.
Adobe application to Microsoft Expression Blend

Is there anybody who knows of an Adobe application in which I can easily edit widget templates, has a more or less comprehensive widget library and, very important, can export to XAML (Blend's markup language)?

I've already tried Grant Hinkson's Fireworks to XAML panel, which worked fairly decently, but apparently (since I've never worked with Fireworks), the widgets in its library don't really work, and I concluded they, as Fireworks itself, are mainly for mockup purposes.

After further research, I found out Mike Swanson's SWF2XAML panel, for Flash. Although I don't know Flash either, It seemed to me its "User interface" components could be the thing I was looking for, since it had a considerable number of them, and already had states (mouse over, mouse pressed, etc) defined.
Unfortunately, the XAML this converter generated had some syntax errors that I couldn't resolve.

If you're interested, here's why I need this:
I'm an interaction designer working in a software company which relies heavily on Microsoft tools, and I've been forced to work with Microsoft Expression Blend (although I do mockups in Adobe Illustrator).
The problem is that it sucks. Editing their templates is very close to torture. Getting the "look" (I can't do much about the "feel" myself, really), right is a daunting task, and very close to a trial and error process, much of the time. When I do get it right, it takes me HUGE amounts of time, unless it's a really simple control, like a text box or a button.
You see, I'm a lone designer among developers. Even if I document my designs down to the last pixel, I know something will be lost or ignored in the process, because it's not a priority, and I have no authority (Believe me, I've already tried this). Sadly, the only way I can guarantee the product's built as I meant it to be, is to do it myself.

Let me just say that I'm willing to learn from scratch ANY application that might fit my objective, be it Fireworks and/or Dreamweaver, Flash, Flash Catalyst or any other. Or anything else, for that matter. If black magic does the trick, I can learn that too.

Waiting anxiously for a reply.
Cheers!

I have been complaining about this for years, but not here Just found you.

It would be wonderful if the whole suite had a preference "I am not connected to the internet", but since I don't seem to be making much progress on that after 3 generations of working with the development team,

perhaps community help could have such a choice, so that we didn't have to wait for the time out.

Thanks

Scott
