iOS 8 - FileStream throwing error 2038 on open for write?

Hey all,

Going through iOS 8 compatibility checks with our Adobe AIR app (tested with AIR 13 and AIR 14), I'm noticing changes to file storage.

In short, my code has always been as follows for simply storing a player profile file (matching iOS documentation for as fas as I know: File System Programming Guide: File System Basics). And this has worked well to prevent purges when the device is low on storage space as well as keeping the data there when updating the app.

This code only seems to work for iOS 4 to iOS 7:

var storagePath:File = new File(File.applicationDirectory.nativePath + "/\.\./Documents");

try
{
     var targetFile:File = storagePath.resolvePath("profile.bin");
     var stream:FileStream = new FileStream();
     stream.open(targetFile, FileMode.WRITE);
     stream.writeBytes(<byteArray here>, 0, 0);
     stream.close();
}
catch (err:Error)
{
     <informs user something went wrong, retries, etc. basic error handling>
}

Running this on iOS 8 will always throw a SecurityError (#2038) from stream.open.

Now, we can still save data and fix this by replacing the first line by:

var storagePath:File = new File(File.applicationStorageDirectory.nativePath);

But, this leaves me with a few things, in order of descending importance:

1) Reading something like this makes me scared as our game has a large amount of daily players: "I’m using applicationStorageDirectory to store files. The problem is those files get deleted when the user updates his app…" (AIR App Compliance with Apple Data Storage Guidelines, last comment)

2) What has changed in the iOS 8 file system that suddenly makes my original code fail? Apple developer documentation is still outlining this should be valid. Is this a possible AIR bug?

3) I assume I need to set "don't backup" flags on the files when saving to the appStorageDir?

4) Is anyone else running into this?

Thanks in advance!

Using StageVideo and Stage3D in AIR - BETA

We're planning on introducing a new ActionScript feature that will allow hardware accelerated video to be used as a source texture in a Stage3D environment. Currently, using video with Stage3D requires the use of the Video object, which is not accelerated, and manipulation of the bitmap representations of the video frames. The planned feature, called VideoTexture, will allow direct access to a texture object that is sourced from a Netstream or Camera object.

The following sample code demonstrates the use of the VideoTexture object.

1) Create a VideoTexture object and attach a NetStream (or Camera) object to the VideoTexture object:

Hi everyone,

A long standing issue in AIR has been the inclusion of an older version of WebKit. The request to update this library has come up many times in the forum and is in the top 10 on the community driven Uplist feature page. As with the recent and ongoing physics discussion, we're not committing to any changes purposed below at this time, as we're purely in an investigation mode at this time. We realize that this is an important feature and we need further clarification on what you're looking for. Please read on for questions from our development team.

We are exploring updating WebKit, but due to our modification of the WebKit source, this will be difficult, and updating WebKit will change the HTML DOM, possibly breaking content authored for our existing DOM.

So we are also exploring leaving HTMLLoader alone, for now, but providing a reasonable alternative.

StageWebView was originally written as a replacement for HTMLLoader on mobile (because we could not use our WebKit on mobile, StageWebView took advantage of the browser provided by the platform).

But it was extended to the desktop as an unsuccessful solution to this problem.

On mobile, content was probably newly written (so it could be tested with StageWebView), and the browsers were similar enough to our WebKit that the DOM impact was minor.

But on the desktop, forcing older content written for our WebKit to run on Internet Explorer 8 (as an example) was a disaster due to the differences in the DOM’s. We resolved this by making HTMLLoader versus StageWebView on the desktop a choice.

Which gets to the questions (for desktop development only).

Which is more attractive, an embedded web browser or using the system browser? Is it valuable to provide both?

For instance, using the native browser can save on code size (perhaps 6 MB), but you must create and test portable HTML, and you face the risk that future updates to the system browser breaks your content.

How much interop do you need between AS and JS?

Hearsay suggests another problem with StageWebView is there is no interop between ActionScript and JavaScript, whereas HTMLLoader had a lot of support.

Would StageWebView be sufficient if it exposed an ExternalInterface, or sandbox bridge, level of functionality? For instance, if AS could register a list of functions which could be called from JS (and vice versa), would that be enough? Or is there something else that HTMLLoader does that is essential?

For instance, one of the ideas being explored is to provide an entirely new class (perhaps as an ANE) which links an unmodified version of the latest WebKit source as a static library. By using unmodified source, we can more readily update to newer versions of WebKit. As well, if we leave the existing classes unchanged, we don’t risk breaking existing content. But if we use unmodified WebKit source, we may find some of HTMLLoader’s functionality impossible to match, which is why I’m interested in understanding the essential functionality, so we can decide if a sufficient, minimal (so it’s easier to support without customizing Webkit) interface for it.

Thanks,

Chris

Android APK Expansion Files for Apps over 50MB

This results in my app apk file size which is over 100 MB.

Google allows to upload apks that are <= 50 MB. For apps which require more storage capacity than this limit, expansion files are needed.

Can you please inform us about how to incorporate these expansion files with an AIR app?

Is there a native extension or a built-in feature to prepare the expansion files and surpass the limit?

I've looked in the forums & there is no definite answer or solution.

If this is not possible at present, can you please add it to the wishlist for the next version of Adobe AIR SDK? I can hear the audio but the only way to get the video is to press back button and then get back to app but in this case the video goes over the UI.

When developing a multiscreen game or app, developers need to read device's screen size to correctly rescale and reorganise screen elements.

I have been always using stage.fullScreenWidth and stage.fullScreenHeight instead of stage.stageWidth and stageHeight as I heard from other developers that the returned values may be incorrect on some devices. But when I tested my app on Motorola Xoom which has Android 3.0 I noticed that a bottom bar that comes from operating system with Home / Back buttons covers my app (Motorola Xoom doesn't have hardware buttons so they are available on the screen). So AIR returns the full height value, including that bottom bar, what causes my app to be behind it. There are some buttons in the app that could not be reached because of that.

I have tested my app on few Android devices available to me against stage.stageWidth and stageHeight and I got correct values. Can anybody confirm if there are still issues on any devices including iOS? Maybe that was only a problem with AIR 2.0 and 2.5?

AIR for Android - StageWebView and Video (YouTube iFrame)

Hey all,

I've been converting an iOS tablet app over to Android and I've noticed the StageWebView has some curious limitations, especially with anything that accessed the GPU (video, etc).

At first the embedded YouTube (iframe) videos would just show the first frame of the video dutifully with the usual play button. When pressed, the video went black and all I heard was audio. The reason I even mention this is it took quite a while to locate this Adobe page with a section entitled "Enabling Flash Player and other plug-ins in a StageWebView object". So I added in the application tag to enable the plugins with acceleration (<application android:hardwareAccelerated="true"/>) and now I can see video.

The erratic thing is on ICS (Android 4.0.x) the video plays in the StageWebView but it horizontally closes to about 20% its normal width. The video player doesn't scale to 20% width, the iframe is just somehow collapsing to that narrow width removing the ability to see 80% of the video or use the controls (e.g. no fullscreen button visible).

When tested on Jelly Bean (4.1.x) the video does not pinch horizontally, it (amusingly) plays horizontally backwards (mirrored) and upside down.

Previously with hardwareAccelerated="true" missing I could press play and then toggle fullscreen and the video would work fine. After adding hardwareAccelerated="true" I can no longer use fullscreen, it crashes the devices after locking up.

I also tried appending ?html5=1 to the YouTube videos to force GoogleAPI to choose a HTML5 player. This didn't do anything.

Has anyone found the sacred tome of knowledge required to get an embedded YouTube video to play in a StageWebView iframe?

Adobe Air 3.0 iOS streaming H264/Speex over RTMP -- No Video

Problem:

H264/Speex RTMP stream from Flash Media Server doesn't display video. Audio plays fine.

Conditions:

Adobe Air 3.0

iOS device (iPad 2, iOS4.3)

App settings:

<renderMode>direct</renderMode>

Flash Builder 4.5.1 compiler settings:

-swf-version=13

-target-player=11.0.0

I have tried using both stageVideo and the regular Video object to render an H264 signal streaming from Flash Media Server over rtmp, but with no luck. I can hear the audio, but the video is never rendered.

I CAN see H263 video when streamed over RTMP using this setup (with just the Video object).

I can also stream a locally stored mp4 (H264/AAC) file over rtmp from the iOS device and play it locally just fine (using a stageVideo object).

I have attempted this with both stageVideo (which works fine when streaming an mp4 file from the iOS device) and with the regular Video object (the regular Video object handles H263 just fine streaming down from FMS over rtmp). I've also played around with backgroundAlpha = "0" for this case, all with no luck.

I've followed all the online instructions and tutorials to get this working for the past week, but have not had any luck. I'm happy to post more code, but this approach is fairly straight forward and has been described multiple times around these forums and in the adobe blog posts. It goes like this:

     - instantiate NetConnection (_nc) to FMS and wait for successful connection:

               _ns = new NetConnection();

               _nc.connect(serverAddress);

     - instantiate NetStream (_ns) and connect using NetConnection:

               _ns = new NetStream(_nc);

     - setup listener for StageVideoAvailabilityEvent; if stageVideo becomes available, attach _ns:

              _stageVideo = stage.stageVideos[0];

              _stageVideo = _stageVideo.attachNetStream(_ns);

     - if stageVideo ISN'T available, fall back to Video object:

               _video = new Video();

               _video.attachNetStream(_ns);

               stage.addChild(_video);

     - play netStream app:

               _ns.play(appName);

My renderMode is set correctly ("direct"), and from what I can tell, this isn't a backgroundAlpha issue.

I have seen this problem described elsewhere on this forums and on the net.

I'd like to know from Adobe: are there any compatibility issues with this approach? There doesn't seem to be any type of compatibility chart listing which video codecs and transport protocols are available on the different mobile platforms. Since mobile deployment is so heaviliy fragmented, a descriptive chart or table like this would be helpful for those of us developing -- at least for the main mobile platforms predominantly in use.

Other forum posts similar to this problem:

http://forums.adobe.com/message/3981541#3981541

http://forums.adobe.com/message/3954578#3954578
<p style="min-height: 8pt;

So after almost a year of using Uservoice, we've realised that it's not meeting the needs of supporting our extensions so we wanted to ask for suggestions on how we can better improve the experience and support we provide. We do strive to provide great support but comments from the community seem to indicate we're not meeting your expectations.

We are a small team and the extensions by no means pay our bills so what we are looking at is improving our usage of available tools to provide better support.

Our current thoughts are to move completely to github for issues and wiki, and start a public forum, perhaps a group on Google groups, but we are very open to suggestions at this stage.

We're hoping to update over the next month. Any suggestions you have as to better software or ways to utilise github will be most welcome, or even if there's something that you feel we're not doing well enough at the moment.

Cheers,

Michael

bitmapData with the dispose method when you are not using it..."

The only thing i am disposing in the first minute is an intro screen bitmap, but i am disposing of it properly as the poster suggested. Assuming this can be related to memory, i leave the into graphic up on the screen visible during the game, and it still eventually terminates anyway. So nothing should be changing related to memory or GC at the seemingly random time of termination.

so before i go crazy... anyone know of other circumstances which could cause the debug session to terminate?

I will mention the game uses GPU mode and is heavy on memory! but it plays very nice and smooth.

Problem installing Adhoc version to iPhone and iPad - Development Environment - Adobe Flash CS6

Hi,

I have successfully submitted 2 versions of the application. There are 2 different versions for iPad and iPhone separately. These were developed using Adobe Flash CS6 and AIR SDK - 4.0.0.1628. The category is Lifestyle and app is free.

Now I wanted to add new feature of push notification to both iPad and iPhone versions. I have successfully tested the development version with development profiles and certificates over iPad and iPhone.

Before submitting the app to Appstore I was trying to test the Adhoc version with production environment and profiles but application was not installing to the iPad, it is the same iPad that is used for development. But after searching forums and other help Adhoc version was not installed to iPad the solutions that were tried are as under:

1. Create new certificates and profile for Adhoc

2. Change Entitlement tags in Application xml file

3. Remove existing profiles from iPad to avoid error.

4. Update OS version of iPad to 8.1

But once I try to last point - [4] even development version is not installing. Because there are no provision profiles installed.

Can you please help/guide me how to fix it? I need to test both development and Adhoc versions on the iPad and iPhone.

Some more information -->>

// Development Entitlement key - it is working fine with development environment

<Entitlements><![CDATA[

          <key>aps-environment</key>

            <string>production</string>

        ]]></Entitlements>

//Adhoc Entitlement key - it is not working application does not gets installed, icon turns dark and keeps saying installing once you hit the App icon.
i0S7 StatusBar Overlays stage, Adobe Air 3.9 Beta Bug? Is there a Workarround

Hi

I am using Adobe air 3.9 Beta. It seems that iOS7 give you the the possibility to style the Statusbar. But if you open an adobe air application the statusbar overlays the stage by default. It creates problems with my tabs.

I tested the app with an iPod and IPhone, both with iOs7 Both have the Issues. If I compile the app with Adobe air 3.8 the Statusbar will be displayed correct.

But I can't use air 3.8 because I need the new Icons 120x120 76x76 etc.

Other people have the same issue. See screenshots https://github.com/mutualmobile/MMDrawerController/issues/51

I think the solution is in the info.plist. There is an option for the info.plist UIViewControllerBasedStatusBarAppearance. We need this paramter to activate or deactivate the Statusbar overlay.

any Ideas?

Porting existing Android native app to Adobe AIR

I indent to port a existing Android native app to Adobe AIR for android. Reasons: To use my existing AS3 skills, "cost" for native is too high and soon port it to iOS.

Difficulties I face here:

Existing app package, say "com.mygame.myapp" has to be retained. By using FB with AIR SDK, we get a "air." prefix to the package name. It becomes "air.com.mygame.myapp".
Will this solution still solve the problem in AIR SDK removing "air." prefix from package name has any working solution!?.
The help link http://helpx.adobe.com/air/kb/opt-out-air-application-analytics.html is dead now. iOS specific is found here Opt-out | Adobe AIR app analytics | iOS
Please suggest me a Mac suitable solution.

In Android, using a ".keystore" file, we need to export as the ".APK" file. In AIR, if we publish using a new ".p12" signature file would it be compatible with Google Play, and it rules.

App's existing users should find difficulty in upgrading the app.

Another unanswered thread Possible to remove "air." appended on package and target a .keystore rather than .p12?

Thanks a lot.
