Day 2, Exercise 4 Error

I am getting an error on exercise 2.4 when trying to run the application with the network monitor enabled. Copied directly it reads:

As far as specific details on the steps I have taken, they are identical to the instructions on the exercise page. I am using the trial version of the Flash Builder 4.6 premium package. I deleted all the files from my 'Day2' workspace and re-imported them to try again from scratch and got the exact same error each time.

Why hasn't the tutorial been updated to reflect 4.7's lack of a Design View?

This series uses version 4.5 which is no longer available. It frequently mentions the DESIGN VIEW and how easy it is to use, yet there is NO design view (nor is there a Components tab on the lower left box) in current version 4.7. Not only that, but the code used in several of the first day examples is not valid in Flash Builder 4.7 / Flash Player 11 and the browser refuses to show those examples (btw: most of the examples still work in 4.7). There are now ActionScript related errors in the examples that demonstrated Design View. You've had 2 years to fix this...

It seems that you might be shooting yourself in the foot here by:

1. Not giving new users who want to learn how to work in this environment current information (or at least linbking to new information). This is NOT a way to encourage new customers!

2. Not showing any work around options - such as linking to Dreamweaver, Illustrator or Flash Pro in some way? or updating the tutorial and showing how to create the components in the code view?

3. Marketing? Standards? groups within the company need to anticipate and develop fixes BEFORE making such drastic changes - this has NOT been done and it reflects poorly on the product (which is actually pretty cool)!

What is the alternative?

Aren't there other tools in CC that can be integrated in some already well defined way? i.e. I can edit a menu in Encore by selecting "edit in Photoshop". Why can't something like this be available?

I realize that this is one of Adobe's evolutionary mashup products (ie. Flash uses the timeline that originated in Director, Premiere & AfterEffects use tools acquired from CultEffects and AutoMasker, etc.) so there are many behind the scenes licensing issues that have determined the product evolution (and the products occasionally evolve in unexpected ways) - but it seems a bit contrarian to remove useful features without providing workarounds that users will think are BETTER than the old way!

Missing .metadata and .fxpTemp files

We are currently building an app for http://bedrijveng1ds.nl and we found out that the code produced by flex builder is easily decompilable with sothink swf decompiler.

How can we protect our flash from such practice, any suggestions?

We really need to protect it, otherwise data might get stolen.

Flex 3 charts xfield and horizontal axis for line series

Hi,

I have some queries with line series.

I am using a column chart along with line series to display data with date field on x axis.

It has a horizontal axis to plot date.

I have not set any x field or horizontal axis in property of line series except for y-fieldd. I had some confusion if it will create any problem if i don't set the horizontal axis and xfield for the line series. Will it be plotted correctly against the horizontal axis.

Sorry it might be a silly question but if anybody could help me out it would be great.

It looks like adobetes.com is down, and I am attempting to access the site as part of the Flex in a Week training. I have been able to work around accessing the .xml files, since there is employees.xml included as part of the projects in Day 4, but I can't find a way to work around not being able to access the wsdl here:

Is the adobetes.com server down?

It was available earlier in the week as I was working through the Flex In A Week exercises, but now I can't access the employees.xml file required in Day 1 and Day 2. I am using version 4.6 on Windows 7 Professional using IE 9. When attempting to access the file directly from web browser, I receive an error that 'adobetes.com' server is not available. And when attempting to access from example application, I receive an Error #2032 Stream Error when attempting to access 'http://adobetes.com/f45iaw100/remoteData/employees.xml'

In the "Flex in a Week" training series, every example I attempt to open in Design mode displays the error:

"An unknown item is declared as the root of your MXML document.Switch to source mode to correct it."

The problem has been posted numerous times, but I've yet to see an answer that describes how I can solve it. Again, I'm using the "Flex in a Week" examples exactly as downloaded from Adobe, no changes.

Appreciate a solution.

I just completed the "Flex Test Drive for Mobile" application. Everything looks good, however, I'm having a problem connecting to a remote server. The remoteObject connection works in the iOS desktop simulator (I see the remote database), but does not connect from the device (iPhone 3G and iPad). The busy indicator just sits there. Does anyone have an idea why this would happen? I have tried both 3G and wireless connections. Thanks in advance.

What I am really looking to do is create a desktop application that looks a certain file paths and checks if those file's exist. If they dont then alert the user, if they do then carry out another function. This may run a photoshop or indesign script. I need an application that constantly updates the stage of where the project is at. i.e this could be down to the user input or if files exist or not.

I have a little knowledge of javascript and understand key basic techniques such as variables, functions, loops and arrays. This is about as far as my scripting/programming knowledge goes.

My real question is with my basic knowledge is worth going through the "flex in a week" training scheme. Only in the second video they talk of "server site technologies" such as cold fusion, PHP or Java. I have absolutely no knowledge of such technologies or concepts. There are alot of videos, so I wanted to know if was worth going down the route of the flex in a week training video series or is there a better route I should go down first.

I have a really desire to get into programming. Everytime I look at learning a programming language I normally find out I need knowledge of a prior programming language. So it seems like a bit of a vicious circle.

Could anyone give an advice of either where they started or with hindsite where you wish you had started. Best ways to learn? Online tutorials, books, training centres? Ultimatley I would like to create a few desktop applications via Adobe Flex, but feel I am someway off that just now.

I got that error message while I am using flex in a week tutorials and have problems with downloaded files exercise tutorials. The error said : "An unknown item is declared as the root of your MXML document. Switch to sorse mode to correct it" It is on design mode view error and not able to do anything else with it onwards

Can somebody help with this problem I wrote that it could have any problem in case there any witespaces in first three lines of code and tried to do so but no result

I dont know what I am doing wrong. I cant even seem to import the exercise files as specified in the instructions. I understand the files are zip archives. even after unzipping the archive I cant find a .fxp type file.

What am I doing wrong? I just want to get started on the exercises.

Training Videos don't play...

Hopefully a quick question...

I'm ready to start the training but none of the videos play. When I click the video on the web page I get a long vertical rectangle with an X in the upper left corner. After downloading and storing the videos, using RealPlayer, only the audio can be heard, but no video. Did I miss something?

In the lesson 2 and 3 (ex1_02_starter.mxml and ex1_03_starter.mxml) there was an error on the line

which begin with

<s:Form x="20" y="78"

I have replaces the namespace s wit mx and the error has desappeard.

I dont understand ! In my Flex buil pass, the mx + sparks ist checked.

This is the lazy way out and not effective. To be a programmer, you need to be able to read and write code obviously, to think in the language, to consult the Actionscript reference., etc. It is not a visual thing and video is not the way to do it. Documentation , on the other hand, is permanent and searchable - so where is it? Just because kiddies don't like to read these days and need a video of everything does not mean Adobe should slavishly follow the fad.

I am using FlashBuilder 4.6 and trying to run the 1_05 starter file from day 1 but I have the following errors for each employee:

I have noticed that even the 1_05 solution file has the same errors as well. I did not try to run these 2 files with FB 4.5 - maybe there were changes to 4.6 that require changes to these files?

Also, changing the layout type has no effect - probably something to do with the error.

Flex in a week encrypted and missing .metadata folder

In addition to the issue of the encrypted files mentioned in an earlier discussion, the current version of the download for Day 1 does not have the .metadata folder as you can see from below so one has to manually import each of the project. It is in neither the ProjectArchive nor the Day1.zip:

I was following along with the turorial just fine until it came to setting up the new problem/solution workspaces. All the files that come out of zipped downloads (full day packages) are show with green file names which I believe to mean that they are encrypted.

Flash Builder 4.5 - PHP/MySQL Data Service Error

I recently started doing the Flex in a Week series, but I seem to be having a problem connecting to a data service. I've chosen to use a PHP service and when going through the 'Generate Sample PHP Service' wizard, I enter the MySQL Database information on my server (I've tried one hosted on GoDaddy and another hosted on Media Temple), but I keep getting the following error:

java.io.IOException: Server returned HTTP response code: 405 for URL: http://localhost/TestProject/gateway.php

I have IIS 7 installed locally. PHP 5 is installed. AMF is installed.

Is this because I am try to access a remote SQL server rather than a local one? Is there a way to use a live server?

There are three minor problems in the Solution Files that are provided in the Windows Zip Downloads.

The ex2_05_web_solution.mxml file contains an incorrect wsdl reference
- This is the reference provided on line 81 (wsdl="http://www.adobetes.com/f45iaw100/remoteData/employeeData.cfc?wsd")
- This needs to be corrected, as the l is missing from wsdl and including www in the domain doesn't return the wsdl. The following should be the new wsdl reference (wsdl="http://adobetes.com/f45iaw100/remoteData/employeeData.cfc?wsdl")
The ext2_05_remote_solution.mxml file contains an incorrect source reference
- This is the reference provided on line 82 (source="f45iaw100.remoteData.employeeDat")
- This needs to be corrected, as the a is missing in employeeData. The following should be the new source reference (source="f45iaw100.remoteData.employeeData")
The ext2_05_http_solution.mxml file contains an incorrect url reference

Trouble Building New Workspace For Day 1 Projects

I am viewing the first day's lesson and am finding this course to be remarkably good for something that's free. I really like it! Thanks for providing it.

One confusing thing I encountered> Being an overachiever, I tried to follow along with the instructor when she created a new workspace and unzipped Day 1's files with all of Day 1's projects in it. In the version she is using in the video, there is no Day1.zip file, and so trying to follow her, I thought I was making some mistake and not building my workspace correctly or not unzipping my file correctly.

I finally figured out that it was different than what she was using and found instructions in the readme file that helped me set it up. Later, I found that the actual exercize at the end of the lesson was using the correct version of the zip file.

I'm not really sure what you could do, but possibly some sort of pop message on the video warning people not to try this yet might prevent others from trying to do it while watching the video and getting frustrated.

when i import a fxp project. there is alittle "x" next to the folder file and the mxml file.

the error is:

couldnt resolve <s:Form> to a componen implementation.

Also,

i tried to run the file, and there is another error message saying:

file not found .... bin-debug/ex1_01_solution.html

Pls help, i reallly want to start the tutorial.

Problem with "Creating a user interface" ex1_02

I was going through the exercise for creating a user interface for the Employee Portal and the window is not resizing at all when the window is adjusted. I thought I made a simple mistake somewhere but my code is exactly the same as the solution file which doesn't resize as well. I followed the instructions exactly as described (triple-checked) and tried running the web application in both Mozilla Firefox 6.0 and IE 8.

I'm working my way through Using Flash Builder from Day 1, and when I tried to switch workspace to the examples I got a warning that there could well be issues with the current version of FlashBuilder and the example projects. Can anyone tell me if I've just made a mistake, or whether this procedure is necessary for every project? If the latter, it seems a little strange not to provide current example projects for the current version of FlashBuilder, considering that as part of the evaluation process they are, in effect, sales material.

I hope I'm just being thick - don't hesitate to tell me!

2 way databinding between DataGrid and DropDownList

I am not getting anywhere with what I thought is the most simplest basic thing in the world.

I have a ArrayCollection "employees" which is used to fill a DataGrid. The department is listed as an Integer value. I would like to display however the name of the department, which is in a second ArrayCollection "departmentsArray". So the itemRenderer (which is not yet implemented in this code) needs to match the "idn" value with the "departmentid" value and then display the name of the department. However, when the user clicks on the DropDownLists and selects a new department, the departmentid value in the employee array needs to get updated too.

I am assuming that this can be done with 2 way databinding, but I am not getting this to work and would greatly appreciate if someone could show me how the code would have to look for this.

I am struggling with this now for over a week and hope that someone can shed light on this for me. What I want is simple: I have an Employee table that I am listing in the DataGrid. In the field for the Department ID I would like to have a DropDownList that displays the name of the department (rather then the id) and be able to select another Department from the pop-up. This DropDownList needs to be populated dynamically, of course, so that it reflects any changes or additions in the department table.

I consider this the most basic info that anyone needs when working with the datagrid, but somehow there is not a single tutorial that I could find about this (and quite frankly, this is a tutorial that absolutely belongs in the "Flex in a Week" series). I would greatly appreciate if someone could point me to such a tutorial or give me some advice how I create something like this in principal. Here is what I have done so far ... please correct me if there is something wrong with my approach:

I created the datagrid, created a PHP Data Service and populated the DataGrid with the data from it
I set the DataGrid to editable and the DepartmentID field to not editable (otherwise a click on the pop-up later might show a text field, which I don't want)
For the DepartmentID field I created an itemRenderer
I opened the itemRenderer and dragged a DropDownList on the area. Then I deleted the standard Textfield that is there in the itemRenderer and also commented out the code that came with it.
Now I created a PHP Data Service for the Departments and dragged the getAllDepartments function on the DropDownList as DataProvider. So far, so good. When I run the application, the DataGrid is visible and when I click on it, all the available departments are in the DropDownList

This is how far I have gotten. Where I am stuck is how I can make this DropDownList show the actual department of the current row. The second part I am struggling with is how the Employee Table is getting updated when I select a different department.

Understanding namespaces video not working

Transitions Exercise 4:10 how to implement following MVC pattern

On day 2 of the Flex for a week series we were introduced to the MVC pattern which makes great sense, however in later exercises

this pattern is not followed and I wonder if anybody could give a helping hand to show how this would apply to Exercise 4:10 if the MVC

patterns was applied. In the code sample from the exercise you can see that Fade is applied to the login panel.

I was trying to move the login panel to a view componend but then wonder how to structure the code to follow the MVC pattern.

Flex in a week - day one - fail!

Seems I can not even get to step one, this is really confusing me ...

I have downloaded the example files and put them in what I think is the correct directory but they are not shown in the package explorer.

Can I be this dim???

chc downloads in application data creates a problem with my roaming profile

I have a roaming profile with a size limit of 150 MB in Windows XP

CHC files are automatically downloaded to the application data folder in this profile

I have to remove the chc files to another location

Can somebody explain how I can inform FlashBuilder the new location of the CHC files.

AND - even better - how to arrange that the CHC files are downloaded to a location of my choice instead of to the application data folder?.

Can you update the links for the provided FlashBuilder workspaces so they are compatible with FlashBuilder 4.5 out of the box? When opening them, I get a warning message saying they were created for an older version of FlashBuilder and I should export/import all projects to update them. Will this be a problem with my own projects as new versions of FlashBuilder are released or is there an auto-upgrade option planned?

Will FiaW change after the announcement of 4.5.1?
