Duplicate entries in RoboHelp HTML v10 (Redux)

I've done some searching through the forums and there have already been a variety of posts related to duplicate search results in a .chm when generated with RH. I've followed the instructions from other posts, so far I have:

1) Created a copy of the project, renamed the .cpd file and reentered into RH.

2) Checked for any topics linked to above the main directory and none exist. Neither the hyperlinks in our help pages, nor the hhp files have any references beyond the root.

3) Removed any old .chm files from anywhere but the standard build location (ssl). We were originally building to the root directory of the project, but that has now all been removed so for all intents and purposes the ssl folder is a brand new build folder.

4) Created a new layout (which was used to target the sll build folder).

All of these solutions have failed to fix the problem, so I'm beginning to wonder if it's something different. One difference between my and others' problems in the forum is the second result does not return a page not found error, but rather links correctly to the page. The only difference between the duplicate results is that the second page always has a breadcrumb that links directly from the mainpage to the subject. So clearly the help generator found a functioning duplicate link inside the project directly from the mainpage to all the pages in our project, but I'm at a loss as to where it could be finding these references. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

Is there a way to create favourites in a chm file that was converted from a WebHelp file?

I am using RH 11. We generally output our help projects to WebHelp, but we still have a few .chm outputs.

Marketing has provided us with a new branding for our Help projects. We implemented the new skin for the WebHelp and then applied this skin to the chm outputs.

This works really well. The only issue is that in the new chm output, we no longer have access to the Favourites functionality.

Does anyone know how to add this functionality or a workaround to create favourites in this new chm output?

Any help would be much appreciated.

What is the best output page-level help for a thick/fat client software app

I am looking to do some reorganizing of some help projects here at my new employer. For the past 10 years, I have only been dealing with web-based apps so all my help has been web help... sometimes page-level, sometimes not. However, I will need to now convert and/or create new help for a software app that is thick-client style. I need to know what the optimum output format would be to work best for page-level, thick-client, online help... HELP!

BTW.. I am currently using RH10 for Windows 7.

CHM not playing FLV and MP4 video files

Hi,

I can't play the FLV and MP4 files in the CHM file generated from single-sourcing FM11 via Robohelp10.

FLV appears with play button but the screen is black. MP4 appears as a hyperlink and when selected it opens the quicktime app and nothing happened.

Please help. I installed the latest flash and quicktime player and installed all the available codecs.

Double display of search topics

We are using Adobe RoboHelp 11. After compiling the HTML files to *.chm format, topics are listed twice (tab search). If one of the both topis contains German umlauts, they are interpreted false. See attached image:

Is there a possibility to clean or build new the search index?

Hi RoboCommunity:

I am using RoboHelp 10 and producing HTML help .chm

I am lone-writer crafting help for a new product. The company purchasing the product and online help provided me with one of their help files, so I could produce something similar.

I have several unique .htt files. Each type provides a unique look and feel (yellow mean one thing, blue means another, etc).

The compiled help includes the following warning:

HHC4006: Warning:

The file "images\qual_01.gif" is already listed in the [FILES] section of the project file.

I have a total of 5 of these warnings. Each warning is associated with a different .gif image.

I have searched the directory for possible duplicates, but there are none.

I used RoboHelp many years ago until my twin girls arrived. They are now 14. My previous version was RH v4. I think this is the correct forum to pose this question. Please forgive my post if it is in error.

I am working with RoboHelp for HTML 9 on a 32 bit machine. Recently, we encountered problems when viewing a .chm file on a 64 bit machine. The TOC was fine, but the topics did not appear, only error message "Navigation of this web page cancelled". My compilation settings did not change since the last compilation some months ago. What happens?

Hello!

I am using RoboHelp 10 and when I transfer my project from WebHelp to a CHM file using the converter tool in RoboHelp I end up losing my context sensitive mapping. If I generate the file directly as a CHM file everything is fine, however, I was hoping to do it this way to retain certain esthetic feature I can only get by generating the WebHelp first.

If any of you could provide any guidance on what I might have done wrong that would be wonderful! Thank you!

After compilation of chm help file, I can see my browse sequences, but the users do not, although I am working on a 32 bit station, the users on 64 bit.

Note: I registered the HHActiveX.dll file as you explained in an older discussion.

I'm quite sure this is NOT possible, but I promised my localization coordinator, I'd ask.

The issue is that we have localized strings (from RH, not from our translators) that are overlapping on the Next and Previous buttons in some languages in the Browse Sequences. Like this:

I've looked, but I don't see a way to expand the button sizes. I know we can change the .lng file to use different (possibly shorter) terms than what RH picked for these, but a better solution would be to adjust the GUI for text expansion in localized languages.

(I am using RoboHelp 9, but have also tried RoboHelp 11 with exactly the same results.)

Our application requires the WebBrowser control to run in IE9 compatibility mode. This means that when launching help (chm) the help viewer will also use IE9 compatibility mode as it is running in the same process. As Chm files are meant to be viewed in IE7 compatibility mode, this causes various issues with the layout of the help topics. We have found that to fix this problem each topic needs the following meta tag in the head element:

As our help system consists of several thousand htm/topic files, we can obviously not do this manually. So in order to have this automatically inserted, I need to edit the mother file that generates the topic files. I have tried to find this file, but no luck. Does anybody know how to do this?

Product mananger is saying the the CHM file has later information than the HTMs files. Not sure how that could be. Is there any possible way to import CHM File into an existing RoboHelp project file?

Custom buttons in Output window

I have been working on a new project in RoboHelp 10 which has a .CHM output file. In the Window Properties dialog for the output I have selected to add a button (Button 1) to the toolbar which is linked to a pdf document. (We have done this many times before in earlier versions.) For some reason I cannot get Button 1 to appear at all. I have tried creating another window and using that instead, and even recreating the project with just a single topic, but to no avail. Other changes I make to the window (size, other features) work fine so I am definitely using the correct default settings to generate the project. If I use Button 2 then I see the button but can't find the pdf, even though I have put it in the root file of the project as normal. Has anyone else had this problem, and do you know of a solution?

Skin change in the RH 5

Presently, i am using the Robohelp 5 version. The chm feel and look of this version is very outdated and doesn't give a modern appearance. I have visited other forums, but the commonly used methodology is to create a webhelp with the new skin settings and then convert to chm. But, this facility is not available in this version. Can you suggest any other solutions for this issue.

Robohelp 10 crashing when generating a CHM

I am running Robohelp 10.0.1.292 on a Windows 7 64-bit with 4GB of RAM. I have a Robohelp project with 1,969 topics from which I've successfully built three WebHelp outputs, but when I generate a CHM file using the same conditional tags as one of the WebHelp outputs, Robohelp consistently crashes on the same topic and produces two crash events in my Windows Event log:

I rebooted my PC and restarted Robohelp, then applied a conditional tag to exclude the topic from the build and was able to successfully generate the CHM file. I turned off the conditional and have tried the following strategies which all result in the same two sequential Robohelp crashes:

Delete the CPD file
Delete topic from project and recreate it
Delete all the links to and from this topic
Remove topic from the TOC
Turn off conditional expressions
Delete the browse sequence
Delete the index
Change the path of the CHM file to one that is outside of the project
Shorten the output path of the CHM file to not have any spaces

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

How do I make RoboHelp report missing graphics?

[RoboHelp 9] Before building my CHM, I need to find out if any linked graphics are missing from the project's \graphics sub-folder. Is there any way I can make RoboHelp report missing graphics? The Broken Links report doesn't care if graphics are missing, only if hyperlinks are missing their targets. The Image Report just lists all the images referenced by the topics, but doesn't test if they are actually present in the required location. And if I build the help, the OutputLog.txt does not report that an image was missing. Any ideas how to detect missing images, before my CHM goes public?

The values entered under 'Drop Down Hot Spot Text Editor' and 'Expanding Hot Spot Text Editor' is shown in the htm file by default expanded.

This problem is coming in Robohelp 10. I am able to open the same content in Robohelp8 version from another machine, the texts are shown with hyperlink and it expand only upon clicking.

I am using IE9.Could this be aproblem? Or any other suggestion in styling and formatting??

RH11, IE10 - Still need help with flashing "Show" text and moving arrow buttons

The 'Back/next' functionality does not work in the Theme2_Government template, therefore I have added my own arrow buttons to the template, using the same image names that came with the template, and relocated these buttons slightly on the template. I have inserted the alt text in the coding (where it was designated in the original code) because there was no alt text in the code.

I have several issues:

The alt text does not display in the generated file (neither locally nor on the server, neither IE nor Chrome)
When I click on a topic in the TOC, the arrow buttons shift right, then back to the left
Also when I click on a topic, the "Show" text flashes on and off

2014/06/26: I'm just looking at the code today, and not being an expert, I am wondering if there is some way I can move the arrow buttons and the code around to make the buttons stop moving.

In the above image, 'Back next' has browse sequences, but these text links don't appear in the generated output. Can I delete the 'Back next', move the arrow buttons over to where 'Back next' are now positioned, and somehow change the code to make the arrow buttons stop shifting every time I click on a topic in the generated output? If so, how do I do this?

RH11: Glossary and Index do not display in generated output

I am having such a tough time with RoboHelp. My current issue is the glossary and index not appearing in the generated output. They used to. However, yesterday I thought I should go in and clean out all the junk in my project, i.e. I had about 5 glossaries and 5 indexes because I was testing things out. I made sure I didn't delete the populated glossary and index, but by the end of the day, they were both gone. So, I located these again from a backup and imported them back into my current project. Everything is there...all my terms and definitions, the index and the links...blah blah. NOTE: Everything is there, but I was required to block it out due to privacy issues.

However, this is how it now displays when I generate: Why won't this populate?

Linking CHMs in RoboHelp 11

I want to link an external chm file from TOC in Robohelp 11. I placed the destination chm file in the SSL folder. Do I need to place the source files of the destination chm file inside of the parent source file as well? Please help.

Why do you have to have TOC and Index tabs together? Why can't you have one without the other?

I'm generating HTML help from RoboHelp 9, and when I click Contents, Index, and Search, the left navigation pane is blank, and I cannot search.

The start page does appear, and I can navigate to topics from hyperlinks in that page.

As of last week, this issue only occurred when viewing help in IE 11, but it is now occurring when I view help from IE, Chrome, and Firefox. Last Friday while it was still not working when I viewed my local copy, I tried uploading it and viewing it on IE11 from the Web, and it worked a bit better. I'm viewing it from the Web now and it's not working.

Does anyone have advice for this problem?

ehlpdhtm.js script error - Object doesn't support property or method 'Activate'

This "Object doesn't support property or method 'Activate' ehlpdhtm.js error all of a sudden started popping up when I view any of the chms I build from my file system.

I initially through it was a 64-bit problem because if I view the chm from my file system I get the script error. But if I copy it to a 32-bit PC or run it from within RH (after it's compiled for example) or a 32-bit version of our software, it runs fine. (However, one of my co-workers tried it on her 64-bit machine and didn't receive any error.) In any case, it seems to be happening on my machine only.

Anyway, it's not on every topic, but on every one that calls the ehlpdhtm.js script with this line of code, it appears to be happening:

I don't think hhactivex.dll plays with this js at all, but just in case, I unregistred and re-registered that dll to no effect. I also tried explicitly adding in ehlpdhtm.js as a baggage file. Again, to no effect.

What could have changed on my system to make this start happening? And any ideas on how to fix it?

Need to disable Options > Internet Options in CHM

Hello,

I have a custom 404 "file not found" page that I use in web-based help outputs. I would like to be able to use it in compiled .chm help.

Does anyone have experience with this? Or is it not possible?

The scenario is that we have several related .chm files. All clients will have the help file for the base product but may or may not have the other help files, since those products require special licensing. We'd like to link the .chms. In old WinHelp days this would be easily done through the .cnt file, and clients just wouldn't see the external links in the .cnt if they didn't have the help system. But since I can't link the .chm help systems in this scenario without possibly having broken links, I'd like the broken link page to provide an explanation of why the user doesn't see help. If anyone has handled a similar situation, I'd be interested in your ideas.

Rh10 - HTML Help - linking to pdf shows when generate CHM and 'view results' but not when double-click on CHM in project folder or in product help

I have several PDFs in Baggage Files that are linked to topics in the Table of Contents. When I generate the CHM file and 'View Results' I am able to pull up/access the PDFs with no problem. When I go into the project folder and just double-click on the CHM file, I cannot pull up/access any of the PDFs nor can I access them in the product help. Any ideas? Is a setting "off" somewhere in my project?

RH 10: Generating local help using WebHelp to chm Converter; local help does not open.

Note: I am relatively new to RoboHelp: formerly a contract writer, a senior staff member used my content when creating Help. She's left, and now I am using the tools she set up on RoboHelp to write and create both local and remote (online) versions of Help content.

Have created online versions successfully for several products. Local has been more problematic.

Using RoboHelp 10; for the past 2 days, tyring to generate local help using WebHelp to chm Converter which uses Webhelp for chm ssl provided by my predicessor. Files generate successfully and I can open and view them.

When added to the application, however, they do not open. We're trying to RTM, but gated behind getting a working local help.

Investigations:

Opened older files (ones that predate me), generated local help, installed chm into current application. Opened, but did not include the skin. (Is that normal? Can I have the skin in local help?)
Checked current Webhelp for chm ssl against older ones -- only changes are to the "title bar" and "content title" to reflect new name for product.) Also, ealier verision had browse sequence indicated in WEbHelp Settings, Content tab, but none of the indicated files were actually checked. ALL OTHER SETTINGS THE SAME.
Checked output reports for both ealier local help (that worked) and current (that doesn't). Mostly the files have the same HHC3004 warnings:

But since these warnings were for both the successful and unsuccess Local output files, I'm not sure they are relevant.

We have been experiencing that the Save All icon does not save everything that is open in RoboHelp 11. This mainly happens with our main page which contains several DHTML dropdown hotspots. You have to go to that screen and then save it.

How do I delete "AppHelp (Default) - Index"?

In RoboHelp 10 I created a second Index that I want to use called "Index - Windows".

The original Index named "AppHelp (Default) - Index" includes hundreds of topics that are absolute garbage as a result of creating it with the Index Wizard! But I cannot delete this because the Delete choice is grayed out.

What do I do to get rid of this (or empty it of all content without deleting one thing at a time?)

Also, why is the Index list not in alphabetical order? How can I force the topics into alphabetical order?

Cannot view topics in generated HTML help

I am using RoboHelp HTML Version 11 with Windows 7 Enterprise/Service Pack 1. My problem is with generating HTML help files. It appears to generate and I get the message that it ran successfully. It even generates the CHM file, but when I click on a topic, nothing happens. The topics don’t open at all. The TOC books do, but not topics. I do get a compiling warning “The size of the stop file has to be limited in 512 bytes.” I have no clue what the stop file is. Did a quick search but didn’t find anything useful other than another user a few years ago who had the same issue and same warning. Unfortunately, I did not see resolution posted. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

saving artwork as html?

Wondering if anyone is having a similar issue. I just upgraded from RH9 to RH11. When using the 'view select topic' button (the glasses) the hyperlinks that go to another page are working fine, but pops are grayed out and not working. They work fine in the generated .chm, so it is not a show-stopper in getting content to clients, but it is a hassle when wanting to verify everything works and looks good in the viewer before taking the time to compile. Any thoughts?

CHM formatting not displaying properly after IE11 updates

After IE updates were installed on my computer, my CHM created with RH10 now displays stripped of all character formatting and screen captures. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Any solutions? TIA.

Linking to local files - strange behavior

Hi all,

when I insert a link to a local file (using Insert > Hyperlink and then selecting "File" in the dropdown list), then Robohelp changes the absolute path to a relative path when saving the topic. Naturally this link does not work in a CHM.

I can resolve the issue in the HTML view by changing the path back to an absolute reference such as:

file://C:/Test/Hello_World.htm

Such a link works in the CHM. However, I cannot get it to work in the TOC. I have checked the HHC and can verify that the path still is absolute there, yet the page does not open when clicked.

Any ideas?

I tried all the solutions from changing reader settings to IE settings... no luck. the chm links works fine when opened on windows 7 and the pdfs open in multi screen and epub output. This is definitely a Windows 8/IE/Adobe Reader issue and it needs to be solved very soon or I may not have a job...

Scroll bars missing in CHM output

When importing a project from HelpStudio, everything imports, but it seems that 2nd level TOC topics are not displaying vertical scroll bars when viewed in the CHM output.

Has anyone else seen this behavior?

Suggestions? ("Other than use another format")

I write a lot of service procedures. Our field people like the procedures to flow top to bottom only without hyperlinks all over the book to remind how to perform various procedures.

Using snippets inside DHTML dropdown boxes, I can provide information to our field techs who need detailed steps and others can just perform the step without having to read a bunch of details they already know. Some snippet steps use information that is repeated all over the book so I would like to put a snipped within a snippet for the novice field guys who really need to know every last screw to turn step by step.

RH9 will not allow putting a snippet inside a snipped. Further, if you have too many levels of DHTML dropdown boxes within other dropdown boxes, it gets confused. Once RH9 let me put a snippet inside a snippet and it worked for 5 minutes and then crashed our project. It took hours to undo that one but we finally got version control to go back in time and then we were ok.

My question, is there any plan to allow snippets within snippets or can that feature be added to the request bin? Also, is it possible for the RH people to test multiple levels of DHTML drop boxes with DHTML drop boxes? ... say 3 or 4 deep?

Having procedures that flow from top to bottom only is becoming more and more important, especially when using tablet devices. Scrolling around and hyperlinking is a hassle and easy for our techs to get lost. The dropdown boxes are working beautifully but we are just having a lot of trouble stacking them several deep in some more complex procedures.

RH-generated WebHelp doesn't display some CSS styles

I've worked with RH for a while, including creating other WebHelp projects in RH that have been deployed without any problem. On my current RH9 project, however, some of the CSS styles are not being applied after the project output is moved to a network directory. When I open the project output on my Desktop, the styles all render correctly.

The styles in question aren't especially unusual:

DIV.text {

width: 640px;

padding-left: 25px;

padding-right: 25px;

padding-bottom: 25px;

margin-left: auto;

margin-right: auto;

background-color: #EDEBDE;

}

P.footer {

text-align: center;

font-size: 8pt;

line-height: 25%;

color: #A13619;

}

The kicker is that some of the styles ARE being applied (e.g., background image), while the 2 styles above are NOT being applied.

Some of the things I've already tried include:

- creating a new copy of the CSS file

- making sure the correct stylesheet is referenced in the HTML files

- making sure the correct stylesheet is referenced in the MasterPage

- making sure the correct CSS type is specified in the HTML files

- adding "!important" to the styles that aren't being applied

Has anyone seen / resolved issues like this before?

Missing: Search Tab

I'm trying to output a project into a CHM file using RoboHelp 8, and the resulting output completely lacks a Search tab. It's got a Contents tab, an Index tab, and that's it. (The project doesn't have a glossary, so the lack of glossary is no big surprise.) I searched through the forums, and the closest problems I saw were from people whose search tabs "didn't work." However, the fix in that situation (re-registering some DLL files), didn't work for me. I'm hoping someone out there has some insight into how to find a missing search tab. Thanks!

Topics not displayed in RoboHelp 10

Hello,

I was happily working in RoboHelp 10 earlier today but when I had to log out and log in again, all topics from the HTML Files folder in Project Manager were gone, and the folder has a question mark on top of it.

My manager is also experiencing the same problem. We have both rebooted our machines and have logged in and out of RH several times but to no avail.

The topics are still in Windows Explorer though.

It feels like there is a problem with the .cpd file but we don't know what it is. Or maybe something simpler of which we are unaware.

Can anyone help please?

Publish error: failed to create chr_book_op.gif

I'm using RH10 as part of TCS4. Multiple projects that are routinely updatedfor the past 10 years suddenly (since the last update) now all fail during the Publish operation with an unhelpful error "Failed to create chr_book_op.gif." The projects generate without error so this is not a problem within TCS4. Since the error occurs in multiple projects, I assume it is a connectivity issue. To test, I verified that I can manually (using Filezilla) FTP all files to the target Web site so I know the FTP settings are valid. I have verified that the Filezilla FTP settings are the same settings as defined in the project's Publish settings. The only thing that changed since the last update is that I swapped out a broadband modem. Everything works correctly with the new modem, and I assume that since I can successfully manually FTP, the modem is not the source of the problem.

Has anyone seen this error before? I'm at a loss as to how to further troubleshoot. It would be a nuisance if I cannot use RH's Publish functionality.

Missing images in CHM file

I am generating CHM help for French, English, German and other languages using RH10. Each time I generate CHM file, images goes on missing from the final output . I could not locate images in Image folder of Project Manager although images are there in the default Test folder of the project.

Is there any limit of pictures in the word doc. that the HTML Help could not generate the chm file? It said "HtmlHelp file has been generated" but there is nothing in the folder !SSL!. The result screen showed that it stop at the thrid line "Starting compilation..." Please help!
