Will FMv9 work after installing FMv12?

Running Win7/64-bit. Have been running FMv7 and FMv9 for some time now.

Recently, I installed v12 and had tinkered with it for a few days before getting around to opening v9 - at which time I've discovered v9 will not start. With splash screen up, only Localization starts, and then "Internal Error 9004, 6921628, 9677518, 0. FrameMaker detected a serious problem and must quit."

I cannot know if v12 installation affected v9, since I had used my pc, worked business as usual, etc. for days before getting around to going into v9.

I am also tinkering with third part add-ons, so I might back track and find this myself. All I am really asking for at this point is for confirmation that v9 and v12 will can be expected to play nice together?

FMv7, Open With/File Association

Installed FMv9 after installing FMv7.

On file server, v7 files now show v9 Icon.

When doubleclicking v7 files, they open in v9.

When right clicking v7 file, to Open With, v7 is not listed as an option. If I Browse to v7.exe and select it, the Open With dialog still does not show v7.

We have to abort Open With, start FMv7, and then drag v7 file onto FM program window. Or, in FMv7 program, do File Menu > Open and navigate to v7 file.

What happened to the File Association to FM v7? And why can we not open v7 files via Open With?

Hey,

I'm trying to use keys as variables in my DITA project, but I can't figure out how to insert a "variable" in a topic using keys?

This is what my dita map looks like:

What happened to Full FM?

Yesterday, I downloaded FM v12 Trial, upgraded to full version with license/serial number, and used it with some existing .fm files for initial testing.

Today, using same icon on Start Menu and/or Desktop, I only have XML Author.

What happened to full install?

Hello everybody!

I will use Adobe FrameMaker 12 in author mode in an upcomming project, and I will continue testing it for two more weeks. As I am new to XML and document creation, I finished an online tutorial about XML and started now to create a document. I entered all files in one directory, then tested & corrected the contents with oXygen XML Author 16. Now, I opened the same files under FrameMaker 12 and have a lot of errors. As XML is a standard, I think that my code is not the problem. Do you have an idea why one & the same documents are evaluated differently by the two tools?

Hi, Frame users

What is your opinion on using Graphics with PDF-format when authoring DITA content, as I'm not sure that PDFs are supported as Graphics-format in DITA?

Reason for this is that I'm trying to switch from using grapics with WMF-format (exported from cad) to SVG-format, but I have experienced some problems when importing Graphics with SVG-format to FrameMaker.

Sómetimes it works, but not always, for example "the filter encountered a problem and could not complete the translation".

I have also tried checking if the files are valid with the W3C online validator.

The only way I can think of is to use tables, but is there any other way?

FM11 creates blank pages on refresh book

Hi guys,

I'm struggling here with some very strange behavior of FM11.

I've got a book (unstructured) with multiple FM binaries (structured).

The first book component is the front cover with some inlay pages including a self generated TOC (out of cross references to the start and end pages).

This book needs to be printed and contains 48 pages total, including the cover as the first and last book component.

Now the first component contains 3 pages and a double sided layout using several self defined master pages (I know there's an issue with deleting surplus pages with no left/right MP).

But that's not exactly my problem.

The problem arises when I try to refresh the book. There's a blank page being created in the first book component, which I got rid of in the first place.

That wouldn't be much of a problem since I can delete that page manually (and it keeps being deleted if I don't refresh anything).

But the real issue is, that the references are updated AFTERWARDS, meaning all page references within the book are one page ahead.

This is unacceptable, as it spans all references in the whole document, which are wrong due to this.

Is there any way I can get FM to not create this surplus blank page?

I'm tight on schedule and cleaning up the mess my boss left me behind with this document,, so quick answers are really appreciated.

Default image file type in Browse (Nitpick Alert)

Is there any way to change the default file type in the Browse window for images, or can I at least add file types to the filter?

My images are mostly Illustrator files. When I go to place a new image, I'd really appreciate NOT having *.jpg come up as the default, and it would be almost as nice to filter by the file type that I actually use without having to select *.* and wade through everything.

Hi,

I'm very new to DITA, I understand XML but am looking to create more documents using it and DITA/Framemaker seems the way to go.

Is it possible to create a document that looks through all of the topics in a folder then creates a new topic from those (essentially a summary), pulling out certain elements?

I'm looking at a timesaving mechanism, so that I can have lots of folders with subjects in each (ie - several topics) then be able to quickly create either summary sheets or note sheets from that content

Hi,

Still finding my way around Framemaker! I'm trying to save as a pdf but exclude some XML elements

I have used DITA for the files (chapters) but seem to have ended up with a framemaker TOC and book format (.fm), but if that will work, that's k for now.

BUT I have cone to save as PDF, then under tags excluded 'note' and 'related links' but they still appear in the pdf output.

Can anyone give me some advice?

FrameMaker 10 - Finding all graphics in a book with a Object Properties Scaling equal to 0%?

Is there a way in FrameMaker 10 in the book to quickly find all imported graphics (.bmp, .cgm, .jpg, & .wmf) that are out-of-aspect ratio or where the Object Properties Scaling equals 0%?

I import a lot of graphic (around a 100 or so) in FrameMaker 10 and I would like to be reassured that all imported graphic have the correct aspect ratio, and find any that are wrong quickly.

I would like to be able to do this search in the Book format rather than each section.

Is there a way to do this?

I cannot update my re-installed FM 11 on my new computer

My computer was just updated. I now have Win 7 on a 64 bit system. Tech. Comm. Suite 4 was installed on it. My apps run fine, but I cannot update FM11. When I use the Product Updates from the splash screen, the extracted .exe file opens a blank dialog and does nothing. When I use Help > Updates, the Application Manager runs until I finally use Task Manager to shut it off, usually after 10 minutes. My co-workers computer updates in next-to-no-time.

On a side-note, I now cannot generate a book with FM components from a ditamap. It generates the files, but the TOC and Index are empty, and it won't create the book file.

HELP!

Quick way to validate DITA specializations

Hi guys,

is there any way to quickly validate a DITA specialization against standard DITA resulting in a list of what had been specialized?

I'm necromancing a long dead legacy document here, that had been written in some DITA specialization.

Problem is, nobody remembers about there wheres' and whats' of the document (my boss even barely remembered that there had been "something").

For now I managed to save it as XML, but the error logs went crazy while doing so

The only person who might have had an idea about the case left the company years ago, too.

The issue at hand is, that the document needs to be imported into some CMS with DITA import filters - and I need to know at least where problems may occur.

As I have literally no time and budget for this, I need some quick and dirty solution

Maybe you guys have some bright idea.

Nested tables

Hi all,

there is some Information in the Framemaker help how to nest tables in structured documents but I simply don't understand how to implemend this. This is a DITA document and I know that nesting tables is very bad style. However it is a requirement and after all DITA does support it.

In unstructured documents we used anchored Frames in table cells. The approach for structured documents seems similar:

"Select a graphic element for empty anchored frames in the Element Catalog, and click New Frame"

I wonder how I can accomplish this. In the EDD I would have to set up an element (perhaps a dedicated paragraph class) to insert an anchored Frame in which then the table is inserted.

Has anybody succeeded in using nested tables in structured documents with Framemaker?

Trouble with Cross-References

FM11 / DITA 1.2

What could cause a particular cross reference to consistently NOT work? I know that's vague. I'll try to give a more specific example:

Let's say I have a collection of xrefs across several XML files in a DITA map. Some xrefs might even point to the same item (usually a <title> tag with an ID attribute). On output to a book with FM components, particular xrefs just will not work (they output as "unresolved"). I can fix it manually in the FM file, but I'd rather it work correctly in the first place, especially since I deal with translation in to several languages, and if I can't get an xref to just work, I have to fix it many, many times.

I've tried deleting the xref and starting again; I've tried changing the ID attribute in case there was some kind of conflict...I still have trouble with that particular xref (and this happens with more than one xref). What else can I try?

Again, I know this is vague. I'd be happy to elaborate on relevant points. I just don't currently have time to write a massive description and I want to get this question out.

DITA specialization - domain specialization

Hi,

I'm trying to create some special elements with DITA domain specialization in Adobe FrameMaker 10. I tried first with "codetable". It's derived from "simpletable", and can be inserted directly after "cmd" in task topics. I followed instructions in http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FrameMaker/10.0/DITA/framemaker_10_dita_integration.pdf. Everything goes well with the specialization. After the EDD, r/w rule, and template files are created, I modified elements "step" and "substep" in EDD to the following and import the EDD to the template:

Then I create a new task (with structured app properly set), insert step, cmd, codetable. Everything is fine until I save the file. It prompts:

It seems that my changes are not adopted by the content model. Anything I was missing during the process. Could anyone please help? Thanks!

Roundtripping Frame Table Cell Properties

Hi all,

We have a requirement for some custom table ruling, and, as we all know, this is not supported natively by structured Frame. We don't need to enforce it via the EDD, but just need to be able to apply it and have it persist in the XML somewhere.

So I read a useful post here (Re: Control table row or cell formatting via EDD context rules?) where Lynne P. provided info on table properties now supported in Frame 11 and 12, and we have tried to implement this.

We are working in Frame 11 using a modified Docbook XML DTD, and we work only in XML, i.e. we never same the documents as Frame binaries.

Here's what we did:

1. In our DTD, we added these attributes based on the list of custom ruling properties from the Frame 12 Dev Ref Guide:

        use-bottom-rule-override          CDATA                 #IMPLIED

        bottom-rule-override                 CDATA                 #IMPLIED

        use-top-rule-override                CDATA                 #IMPLIED

        top-rule-override                       CDATA                 #IMPLIED

2. In the EDD, we added these pairs of attributes on our <entry> element (representing a table cell):

UseLeftRulingOverride

UseRightRulingOverride

RightRulingOverride

All attributes are optional. Each of the "Use....Override" attributes have a possible value of "0" or "1" to act as a switch for true/false. Each of the other attributes have possible values based on Frame's style of the custom ruling as defined in the Table Designer, in this case, "None, Double, Medium, Thick, Thin, Very Thin".

3. In our rules, we added these attributes to the <entry> element, like so:

We also mapped the Frame attributes above to the XML attributes in the DTD, i.e. for example:

attribute "use-bottom-rule-override" is fm attribute "UseBottomRulingOverride";

...<etc.>

Here's the result:

It seems that everything is "working", meaning that Frame is recognizing the attributes and is not throwing any parsing errors, however:

I create a new table, then:

1. In a cell (entry element), I set any of the "use...." true/false attributes to "1". Then I set the other one in the pair to some supported value, such as "Thick". No visual change occurs. I close the file, re-open it, and the values are still set, but no custom ruling occurs.

2. I set some custom rules using only the Custom Ruling and Shading dialog. I have the XML open in a text editor, so look at it and Frame has set the relevant values to the appropriate attributes, i.e. the "use..." are now "1" and the matching pair is whatever I choose, for instance, "Medium". When I save, close and reopen, some of the custom ruling is retained -- inside borders but never outside borders. Also, never the ruling between the heading row and a regular body row -- yet the attribute values are retained.

So, while Frame allows me to set the attributes explicitly and retains them in the XML, any custom ruling set via attributes and not the dialog is not retained.

Thoughts, anyone?

FrameMaker SDK Question: How to read an XML file

Hi,

I am using FDK 12.0 on Windows (using Visual Studio 2012) to make some changes in a FrameMaker document programmatically. I have never used this or any other Adobe API before and am somewhat struggling with the concepts. Primarily I am using the sample programs, coming along with the FDK to guide me.

Now, I want to open and parse an XML file, whose content I will use later to manipulate the texts in a FrameMaker document. In .NET framework there are several classes (XMLReader, XMLTextReader etc.) to read and parse XML files easily. However, it seems I cannot use these Common Language Runtime classes because, apparently, a FDK plug-in needs to be a) C program and b) should not use CLR. In view that, can anyone please indicate if there are any suitable set of functions in FDK itself for parsing an XML file. Otherwise, is there any pure C based XML parser I can use? Some actual sample will be very helpful.

FrameMaker - Good choice for building database driven website?

I am moving toward data heavy websites (the more data the better) and wondering if FM 12 will work for creating the database and the site. Obviously I am new to FM but I have been reading the help files and various white papers but there is not much info on this so I am wondering if my assumption is incorrect. Can I create interactive forms in FM? Webpages that run from a database created in FM? Will web pages created in FM be bulky with extra unnecessary code or will they be lean? I have read about FM being able to export in HTML5 but I wonder what the actual quality and functionality of the resulting pages/website/mobile site. Your opinions are welcome.

I've tried changing things in the commonelements.mod, but with no luck. I know you can do this. I am not a programmer, so it would be helpful to have it explained in a step-by-step manner.

We are using structured FrameMaker11 to generate tagged information in accordance with S1000D build rules, and after we created all our (newlink) targets, and then built the corresponding (gotolink) pointers in our table of contents, list of figures, and list of tables, etc., we tested each one in FrameMaker11 and they all seemed to work. However. When we made a print to PDF (with links) some of the links did not work in the rendered PDF. We could not see what we were doing wrong.

One of our team used "CutePDF Writer" and all the links in the rendered PDF worked perfectly.

What's going on, and how can we use our FrameMaker product to produce reliable PDF links?

Unable to convert a structure FM (11) file to RTF

When converting a structured FM 11 file to RTF, FM freezes for a while, and when it's working again, the output is either a corrupted .rtf file, or FM crashes. The file we are trying to convert is over 200 pages long and has several images linked.

Is there a way to convert the FM file to RTF and maintain some formatting? We have tried saving the file by extracting it from the PDF, but the output does not have any formatting to it.

Seems to me that EDD is a huge document to find anything in. Does one just add elements in alphabetical order so they can be rediscovered? Any tips or tricks about organizing this?

I'm in the analysis/design phase of going through my unstructured document to see how to build an EDD. Does one do the analysis using a spreadsheet?

Referencing Table Numbers in Structured Framemaker 12

I am evaluating Structured Framemaker 12 using DITA. I have placed a cross reference to several tables in my topics and want to reference them from the paragraph text e.g. Table 1, Table 2, etc. The Format Options I see are for DITA Default Format or for Figures (Figure, See_Figure, See_Title_and_Page, Title_and_Page) - none of which work. Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong or missing?

Hierachical element insert

In FrameMaker 11 it was possible to use the quick Element Catalog to select a Hierachical element. For example, from the Quick Element Catalog I could highlight ItemizedList, then to the right the child elements would appear as I moused over it and I could then select ListItem, and then Para. Clicking the hierarchical Para element would insert Para, ListIem, and ItemizedList elements in the proper nested order.

In FrameMaker 12 I cannot do this. Am I missing something?

FM 11 and entities

We have a process for typesetting large amounts of text which involves importing SGML content into FM11, and then importing formats and element definitions onto that content.

We recently upgraded from using FM6, and with that previous version of FrameMaker, when the content contained an unusual entity (e.g. a letter i with a macron above it), the system would default to using a different font in which we had the correct symbol for the entity. Unfortunately we cannot work out how to get FM11 to replicate this, so end up with question marks replacing the entity.

We do not currently use a Structure Application or DTD, and have a very simple default.rw file:

fm version is "11.0";

* Include all ISO entity mapping rules.

#include "isoall.rw"

element "Paddr" is fm footnote element;

element "Paddrstart" is fm footnote element;

What is the best way to get FM11 to recognise that these entities need to use a different font? I've tried looking in the various online documentation pdfs, but couldn't see how to solve this problem.

Publishing DITA content through DITA-OT or Save as PDF?

Hi Frame users and DITA enthusiasts

I would like to ask for your opinions when publishing DITA content to PDF, either with DITA-OT or Adobe PDF.

This is my first DITA Project and I been testing and playing around with both options but feeling stuck as I can't decide which option to go with.

Both the DITA-OT or Save as PDF will require some modifications, so I rather do things the hard way, then having to go back and create a new publishing template later.

Running header/footer background color from XML attribute

I'd like to set the background color of running headers and footers, based on an attribute from an element in my imported XML-file.

Basically what I want is to have different colors of headers or footers for different chapters in the book (catalogue).

Is there any way to do formatting like this from the EDD or rules? Or is there some other way to achieve a similar result?

Query about structured Frame templates

In Frame 12 all the templates have been updated.

I built my book using unstructured templates because I wanted to get a feel for the changes from my last version of Frame (8).

I now think I will need to redo the book entirely using the templates from structured Frame.

The unstructured Frame template for a book has all master pages in every file in the book. The structured template for Chapter has only master pages: left, right, first. Is there a reason for this? (Should not every file in the book have the same master and reference pages?)

Export paragraph format tag to attribute

Using structured FM 11 on Windows 7.

I need a way to round-trip paragraph format tags. I know it is easy to assign them on import with the EDD, but I'm not sure how to save them on export.

I was hoping the read/write rules could contain something along the lines of:

attribute "paraFormat" is fm property paragraph format tag;

I figure it can probably be done with ExtendScript or a custom API, but I would rather avoid these if possible.

Master pages failing to be applied (along with some unexpected behavior)

Hi all,

I am having trouble getting our structured app/template to apply master pages properly. We're on Frame 11 using an XDocbook, customized app.

Here is the configuration:

1. Reference page structMasterPageMap:

Maps element E:BookInfo to the "Title Page" master page.
Maps element E:PrefaceInfo to the "Frontmatter" master page.

2. Frame XML document content:

<title>

</bookinfo>

As you can see, this doc does not yet have a PrefaceInfo element, although one is allowed by the DTD. So the obvious solution is to either: 1) add one (wrap the <copyright> element in a <prefaceinfo> element as allowed); or 2) add an "E:Copyright" mapping to the ref page. Yet, neither of these work. Here's what occurs:

Solution A: On the Ref page, add a mapping from E:Copyright to the "Frontmatter" master page:

1. Open the document in Frame and note that the master page Title Page is applied, but the master page Frontmatter is not, as expected.

2. On the ref page, add the E:Copyright mapping to apply the Frontmatter master page.

3. Reapply Master Pages, and the Frontmatter page is applied, as expected. All is good....except. When you close and then re-open the document, no master pages are applied, not even the Title Page which had previous worked. Huh, what?

4. Remove the E:Copyright mapping from the ref page, reapply Master Pages, and the Title Page master page is again applied.

Note: This behavior is reproducible whether I replace the E:PrefaceInfo with E:Copyright on the reference page, or retain both. I can also reproduce this by using the paragraph tag instead, of the element, i.e. P:FrontmatterCopyright.

Solution B: In the document, add a <prefaceinfo> element:

1. Open the document in Frame and note that the Title Page master page is applied while the Frontmatter is not, which is expected.

2. Wrap the <copyright> element in <prefaceinfo>.

3. Reapply Master Pages. Nothing happens, i.e. the Frontmatter master page is not applied.

4. Save, close, and reopen the document. The Title page is applied, but the Frontmatter is not.

Yes, I have checked and rechecked that the actual master page names match those entered into the reference pages, including case. :-)

Possible conflicts/factors?

1. Could the structure of the document (as allowed by the DTD) affect master page application? The element <copyright> can exist both inside a <prefaceinfo> and independently under <bookinfo>. This doesn't seem likely, especially because as a test, I saved the doc as .fm, discarded the structure, updated the ref page to use para tags instead -- and still the master pages are not applied correctly.

2. Pagination can affect this -- at first we had Format>Page Layout>Pagination set to "Single Sided" so I thought that was why the left-hand Frontmatter was being ignored. But I have ruled that out; the template is now double sided, and Frontmatter is a left page.

I am stumped! Thanks in advance for any ideas.

column width from xml attribute to framemaker table

I'm trying to set the column widths of a table in framemaker by importing the width from an attribute in the imported xml file. But it doesn't work...

This is from my read/write rules:

element "ITEM-CELL-LIST"

{

is fm table cell element;

attribute "width" is fm property column width;

fm property column width value is "2cm";

}

The last line that specifies the width to 2cm seems to be accepted as I can save the EDD as DTD without errors, but it has no effect on the actual widths of the table created.

The line above it doesn't work at all. When I try to save the EDD, I get the following error: "Invalid property specified for the element (ITEM-CELL-LIST)."

I've tried every way I can think of, but nothing seems to work

The only way I've been able to actually set the widths is by creating a table in the master template page and resizing the columns. That carries over to the imported xml.

How do I roll back from FM12.0.2 to earlier state?

Word Wrap Lost When Switching Between XML and Author Views

I compose DITA topics in the XML view with the word wrap option selected. If I switch to the Author view to check something and then return to the XML view, my nicely formatted XML view with all the happy element-nesting tabs goes away. I wind up with an ugly chunk of flush-left code and text that's difficult to read. Is there a reason why FM can't remember the tabs and word wrap when I return to the XML view?

I'm relatively new to using FM's structured side for DITA, so perhaps I'm missing the obvious solution to this problem. If you know the answer, I'd appreciate if you'd clue me in.

Internal Error 12024, 18652356, 18692061 and 18514761 during reopening a FM12 file

Hello everybody,

I can not open a FM12 file, the internal error code 12024, 18652356, 18692061 and 18514761 tells me nothing and I unless searching for a plain text translation for the error codes! This kind of trouble occures from time to time but now, first time on FM12. Therefore I try to check if my EDD rules producing this mistake, error or other undefined loop. I like to fix this error but I need to know where is the mistake, one week of work are be in danger in this case... !!!

Anybody a idea to fix this issue? (no *.Backup / *.Recovery file existing)

FrameMaker 12 won't startup

Hello,

I'm running FrameMaker 12 on Windows 7.

When I startup the program, I must select one of the follow three.(in 'Choose Interface' window.)

- FrameMaker

- Structured FrameMaker

- FrameMaker XML Author

Unfortunately, after clicking 'Structured FrameMaker' or 'FrameMaker XML Author', error is occurred.

Error message is follows.

- Internal Error 12004, 23459156, 23459450, 26389685. FrameMaker has detected a serious problem and must quit.

Please, I hope that I receive a good solution.

Here is where my problem occurs: (FM Structured open) File menu > Print Book > PDF setup > Bookmark > Include Elements. Here inside the Include Elements column, how can I move all the element to Don't Include area? Now I can only move one by one but there are hundreds of elements. However I didn't find a Move All button. It's so strange. Can anyone help?

Hi,

So, we have a document (1000+ pages long) with hundreds of help topic IDs that were auto generated when the document was first created. We now need to access certain sections of the documents and make updates, but the only point of reference given is the help topic ID.

Is there a way in which we can extract the help topic IDs along with the heading name, or at least view where each help topic ID is?

DITA Open Toolkit (DITA-OT) nothing happens when building output

I'm trying to generate PDF2/XHTML using the DITA Open Toolkit with FrameMaker 12 but nothing happens when building the output.

I can see the command line start but is then immediately shutdown, and there is nothing generated in the output folder.

I have installed the Java JDK and set the Java_Home variable (before that the output options box didn't open).

Do anyone have a glue what is wrong?

I have used Framemaker 6 to produce and publish a few guidebooks. I would like to take the most recent book from this year and make available an eBook version for Kindle.

My book is about 400 pages and has many maps, photographs, and tables. I doubt running the PDF thru any of the tools like Kindle Direst Publishing (KDP) will produce output acceptable to me.

My questions:

1. Does FM 12 do a good job of importing an FM 6 book source?

2. Would you recommend this as the best path to do produce a quality eBook?
