Random de-selection

I've found this to be an issue ever since I first started using indesign 3 years ago, and its' occurrence is rare so there has to be a reason behind it happening. How come sometimes when shift selecting objects, other random objects that you have already selected will unselect themselves? For example, I am selecting 4 random objects on my spread, I select 1, then 2, then 3, then 4, and object 2 unselects itself when I selected object 4?

Never click on overlapping areas. Sometimes they are hardly recognizable.

not overlapping in this case they were all separate strokes not even touching

Are you using the group selection tool (black arrow) or the direct selection tool (the white arrow)? I've seen similar results to yours when using the direct selection tool but not with the group selection tool.

I can only share, besides Im still on CC2017 and that maybe have changed, that you have to be careful while klicking:
try to dont click borders/hull and anchors while using the white arrow.
