Wrong cursor showing on screen

When I select the clone stamp and alt click on the screen, the cursor has two arrows one black and one white and I get a message to say that I have not selected an area.

Looking at my friends screen and also selecting the clone stamp the cursor is round with a cross hair in the middle and the clone stamp works perfectly.

I have read about this problem but everybody has focused on the alt click key being the problem,  not sure what cursors other people are seeing but surely the cursor style should be important for the tool that is being used?

The two arrows you describe are what appear when you press the Alt key with the Move tool selected. Are you sure you have the Clone Stamp tool selected? After seeing the arrows, did Ps set the sampling point? (Meaning can you clone?)

Have you tried resetting preferences?

Clone stamp selected.

No I could not clone.

Yes tried setting everything to default.

Besure you work on right layer

Use Caps Lock to change your cursor

And you can also use preferences and category Cursors to make changes

You use Smart Object (i suppose)

You have to rasterize this object  - use Layers panel and use right click to rasteize this layer

or

you can add new empty layer and check use: all Layers before cloning

OK let's get things straight.

1. jpeg opened from folder into photoshop.

2. No layers, no masks just a normal jpeg.

3. Select clone stamp, alt click on jpeg, black and white cursor arrows show, message saying I have not defined an area.

4. Everything set to default settings.

5. Caps lock not on.

Hooray! Found a solution, not me, Adobe technical.

Did a live session with Adobe and found my right side Alt key was not functioning properly.

Now using my left side Alt key and it works perfectly!
