Hi, got a tricky problem since a few months. My Adobe applications (higher than CC15), mostly Photoshop, are causing Bluescreens with some error codes like listed below. I did almost everything to nail this down but I can't fix it. I did stresstest on CPU, GPU and also tested my RAMs with Memtest and switched them with another kit. Also I've checked every driver and every cable inside my PC and all the temperatures. I can force the Bluescreen in two cases for now, the other cases seam random to me.
First: When I open an image (mostly with a large file size) in Photoshop CC17/CC18, by doubleclick or with File -> Open (CC15 works for every file without Bluescreen)
Second: When I use a plugin called Alien Skin Software (Exposure V2 or BlowUp) on big file size images or with big operation (like blowing up an image from 3000 to 10000 pixels size)
Bluescreen View shows something like this, always with hal.dll (Hardware) and ntoskrnl.exe:
Bug Check Code: 0x00000124
Parameter 1: 00000000`00000000
Parameter 2: ffff8a89`4fb74028
Parameter 3: 00000000`b2000000
Parameter 4: 00000000`00070005
Caused By Driver: hal.dll
Caused By Adress: hal.dll+3bf1f
File Description: Hardware Abstraction Layer DLL
Crash Address: ntoskrnl.exe+1640e0
I also do a lot of 3D stuff on my PC which needs a lot of power, but I don't get any Bluescreens in applications like Maya, Cinema or Substance so far. Which brings me to the point of thinking about an Adobe (maybe bug) which at least triggers this hardware error. The only thing that's still possible to me is a damage on the hard drive (where Photoshop's installed) or a fabrication fail on CPU or Mainboard (but I think this would cause errors in 3D Software as well).
I've tried everything... ^^ So if you guy got an idea about this it would be great to hear from you!
Thank you very much.
Marcel
We can see you are using an 8 core CPU. Which CPU is it, and on what motherboard? If it is a new system with i9X processor and X299 motherboard, then there are issues when using Turbo mode 3 with Adobe apps

Hi
Can you post some system info (Photoshop >Help>System info - copy and paste into thread). It will help others to see if anything is unusual in your set up.

We can see you are using an 8 core CPU. Which CPU is it, and on what motherboard? If it is a new system with i9X processor and X299 motherboard, then there are issues when using Turbo mode 3 with Adobe apps

There are some issues in that system info which point to it being a non- genuine copy of Photoshop, not least the License Type of "Unbegrenzt" - which I believe translates as "Unlimited". CC is sold on subscription only (License Type Abonnement).
If that is not genuine software I can't help you. If you do have a CC subscription then I suggest you uninstall and download the latest version (r.190)

You are the chief! Fixed my problem with just 2 clicks in the BIOS. Thank you very very much!

You're absolutly right, sry for that. Just to don't look like an idiot here I like to say that I have a valid license which I'm using at work, but not installed on this PC yet. I think the latest version of Photoshop (official) will solve this problem too. Again, sry for that

OK so that will be the 7820X then. Skylake, thank goodness, and 28 PCIe lanes. Apart from the BSODs, which I am very much relieved to hear you were able to fix, as it seems that a LOT of people are building X299 systems, how are you finding the performance?
Are you using NVMe drives, and if yes, which ones?
I think I have read that with 28 lanes, you have to choose between SATA ports and M.2 slots. Are you able to use three M.2 slots, even if that cuts down on how many SATA ports you can use?
Do you have to switch that option with MB headers, or is it a BIOS option?
How are you finding the performance generally? Unfortunately you can't answer the question I would be most interested in, that being how well does Turbo Mode 3 work with Photoshop? We like to think that Photoshop is lightly cored, but quite a lot of filters and features do use all 12 threads on my 3930K system. Perhaps now you have the BSODs sorted, you could evaluate and give us some feedback? Any information would be appreciated.
BTW Our Dave is like Sherlock of the forums, and doesn't miss a thing.

Hey Trevor,
I'm currently not using the NVM drivers, all my SSD's/HDD's are connected with SATA. I built a new system and take the HDD's from the old one. Definitely will test that in the future, but for now it was a bit to high price to switch every component
I've changed the option in the BIOS, exactly like written in the article you send to me.
As far as I was able to see yesterday at 2am ^^ the performance of Photoshop was very good once I've changed the volt count on the cpu. Seems very fast to me, even as I sized an image from 3000 to over 10000 px width with Alienskin Blowup the system was running stable and fast, which is a good sign and sort of a benchmark test with this problem I had. I'll check out the performance in the next month and give you a detail feedback how it works.
Yeah true, Dave's the Sherlock, but he's right too. It isn't right to contact you on the Adobe Forums with a cracked license. I know that. But this problem seemed to go very deep into the system and nobody (not even IT or hardware guys) were able to locate the problem. This is even a bigger award for your skills on the Adobe board I think
Again, thanks a lot! & have a nice xmas

Aside from the legal/moral issues, the problem with hacked copies is that they often do not work correctly. There are problems with the library files in your copy and you never know whether the person who cracked it has inserted other unwanted code which may bite you later.
Not worth the risk in my view.

Hi Trevor,
hope you're doing well.
Like I promised a month before I have a little update for you concerning Adobe on Skylake. First of all, the voltage change just fixed the problem in a first way. Very soon the BSODs started to come up again in Photoshop and InDesign beside working stable the meantime. I did some testing on it and learned that a lot of the BSODs are caused by plugins (like Alienskin in my case) which work on multicore (like you mentioned before). But also other things (most small actions which seems random to me) let to a BSOD like before. But the voltage adjustment definitly changed something and I was able to start up the software again and even work on it. Beside the BSODs what I can tell the software works pretty well. It's hard for an artist to see difference between the systems to be honest. It's like I suggested when I bought the Skylake. Adobe works well as always (when no BSOD happens) and the system runs faster then on my older CPU which wasn't a Skylake.
But now to the real problem and it's solution for the moment. One week ago I found a new BIOS version which was released on the 10th of January by Gigabyte for the X299 mainboard I have. I q-flashed my BIOS with it and also installed the new and recommended drivers mb_driver_chipset_intel_x299series and mb_driver_intel_me_x299series, as well as adjusting the voltage settings which you sended me. After this it seems like a really big update to me where Gigabyte finally did a great job. My whole system works way faster and stable now and I didn't got a single BSOD the last days. I'll go on with some further testing the next weeks and will tell you if there are some BSODs again.
PS: I got one BSOD in Maya during the last month. So it seems like not only Adobe applications do have problems on X299

It's worth knowing that it is impossible for an application bug to crash the system. The system is designed to stop this, so if an app does it, the system is faulty (kind of like, if you can shoot through bulletproof glass, it isn't the bullet that is faulty). So that leaves
* system
* hardware
* device drivers
Device drivers are a frequent cause of blue screens. hal.dll is a device driver that's part of the system, and crashes in hal.dll usually relate to hardware issues, which covers all three.

Hi Test Screen Name,
thanks for your reply too. Yeah I thought something like that. It just seems to me like there's a branch of operations especially in the Adobe applications which trigger this Bluescreen. I've rebooted the System already and also checked all the device drivers. I'm sure it's something about Hardware. But as I told, I did stresstests on every component possible, without any Bluescreen. It can be a specific error on mainboard or in the cpu but this would be very hard to find in my opinion.

You could maybe at least eliminate the GPU by turning that off.
