Shapes from vector layers?

Hello,

I'm new to After Effects and I have some illustrator artwork that I'm trying to convert to shape layers in after effects. I do what was recommended to me and import the AI file by importing it as a composition and retain layer size. Once the files have been imported I right click and click "create shapes from vector layer". When the shapes have been created there is a bounding box the size of the composition and not the size of the original layer. It looks like this. Is there a way to create shape layers from AI files and have the bounding box around just the layer size and not the whole comp? I'm using AE and AI CC 2018.

Thanks!
