Not for me.
Wanting to add stabilizer
I just did this successfully 1 hour ago.
Helpful hint -- you put the footage IN A COMP, highlight that footage layer in the comp, then apply an effect.

That IS a helpful hint

ok I thought "import" put stuff into the composition.
IN fact I thought everything was in compositions.

Well, then it's time for AE Boot Camp for you, bud!

that's for sure. I never want to stop and wade thru bunches of tutorials
that I will forget when I hope I can get thru one simple task.

Too bad I can't change your mind about that. You're going to have some tough sledding with AE if you don't know the basics. You've been warned.

Doing tutorials is not about whatever the random result is.
It's about the 20 little things you learn along the way.
A tool or shortcut you didn't know about.
Working around a common problem that you will run into.
An unexpected answer to question you may have had for awhile.
And of course, that you have to add assets to a composition.. LOL
Etc....
Another way to look at your statement is:
Because you avoid wading through bunches of tutorials
you can't even complete that "simple task" by yourself.
Reality bro. Check your head.

i know all that; when I have time I'll look at tutorials.
Thanks for telling me what I know tho with due respect.

You're welcome. You should try thanking "people" for telling you what you didn't know

OK let me thank you for this. I read the tutorial on adding effects.
I put all the key frames in and some are SQUARE and nothing
at all happens. What did I miss please?

You missed learning the basics about keyframes.
As Dave LaRonde said.
" You're going to have some tough sledding with AE if you don't know the basics. You've been warned."

I suggest you click the link that says "beginner"

Right-click on keyframe and choose keyframe interpolation -> temporal interpolation. Gutter-Fish is right though, start at the beginning if you really want to use After Effects. I'd suggest doing a free trial at Lynda.com and invest 8-10 hours in a fundamentals course and follow along with what they do. I'm sure you're getting tired of this "advice", but it will save you a lot more than that in the long run.

temporal interpolation will likely not be available due to the fact that the properties with the holds are not temporal attributes but switch or bollean attributes which is why they have holds in the first place. The comes the issue that this person set a (singular) keyframe on every single attribute and is wondering why nothing is happening.
They have absolutely no clue what they're doing which is expected for a beginner.
However it was their (repeated) explicit statements that they "didn't have time to waste on tutorials" that drew my terse responses.
I've added them to my "follow" list which tells me to ignore them.
I don't waste time on fools.

lynda.com was the plan but they stole my money and gave me nothing and still fighting with them.
Now i just want to add one dumb effect to a tiny file that worked the other day but not this time.
