Deleting pictures

High all,

If I take a picture with a mobile device it will show up in the LR CC catalog and or in an album. Deleting a picture from an album will not remove that picture from the catalog. That has to be done manually in the catalog.

Pictures taken with my Nikon and imported in LR classic will only show up in LR CC after synching.

If I delete a picture taken with a mobile device from the LR CC catalog it will be gone. However not the picture taken with the Nikon since that one will still be in LR classic.

How can  I solve this, I mean how can I prevent losing pictures when deleting out of the LR CC catalog?

Kind regards EH

This is how the cloud ecosystem is designed to work. As such, images removed from the Lr CC catalog are also removed from the cloud, and thus permanently deleted.

But if you let the pictures taken on the mobile device sync back down into Classic before you delete them from the cloud, they'll still be retained in Classic after you delete from the cloud.

Jim Wilde good morning,

well what you stated is however not the case.

When I make a picture with a mobile device out of an album in LRcc that picture will appear in this album as well in the LRcc main catalogue AND in the all synched photographes album in LR classic.

That album was already existing in LR classic as a collection, so that new picture is also visible in that collection.

After deleting that picture in LRcc it is gone in LR classic as well even though it was synched into LR classic.

May be I am wrong or I make a mistake but this is what is happening.

Kind regards EH

Are you sure it's actually been deleted from LR Classic (that'll be a major bug if that's the case)? Note that it WILL be removed from the All Synced Photographs collection (because it's no longer synced, right?), and IF the collection that it was in is a synced collection, then it will be removed from that collection also. You should, however, still be able to find it in the folder that it was downloaded into in LR Classic.

If you know the filename of the file, search for it in LR Classic's library filter.

Well Jim I tried again with the same result, the image has completely gone from LRcc as from LRclassic as well after deleting it in LRcc. Even unable to find it in the specified download folder you mentioned.

So???

If you are absolutely certain that the file had synced down into LR Classic before you deleted it from LRCC, and you are equally certain that the file is no longer in Classic, then that has to be a bug of some sort. In which case you need to report it at the official Adobe feedback site: Lightroom CC | Photoshop Family Customer Community

Finally this does mean to be very careful in deleting from LRcc. For example you make a wedding shoot and you do 50% with a Nikon and 50% with a mobile device and after correcting the images in LRclassic you can make your shoot public in order to present to your relatives. Thereafter if you want to make space in LRcc and you remove the album and the pictures out of LRcc you will lose half of your work in LRclassic as well.

No, that should not be the case, and is not the way it is designed to work. I've tested it several times, including just now, and if I delete the images via LRCC after they have been synced into LR Classic, those images are NOT deleted from Classic.

If you can reliably repeat the problem that you saw, as I suggested you should report it to Adobe as a potential bug.

Jim,

I can't reproduce the issue either when I follow your guidance. Nevertheless, I believe the approach adopted here by Adobe here leaves a LOT of scope for confusion and/or error. It should nor be necessary, and in some cases may not even be possible, for a customer to wait until an images has been downloaded to Classic before deleting from Lr CC. Take, for example, a customer on holiday who finds that after a few days they've exhausted the space on their mobile device. No problem, the images are safe in the cloud! So, the customer deletes some or even all to make space. Unfortunately in doing so, the customer has also removed the images from the cloud, and therefore they never even get to  Lr Classic. Then again, may be I'm misunderstanding delete behaviour.

No Ian, I don't think you are misunderstanding the delete behaviour, and I'm sure some poor users will fall down that hole. What's needed is the ability to remove the original images (and perhaps any Smart Previews as well) from the capture device, whilst leaving the record of the image (which would then be only grid thumbnails) still in the LRCC app on the device (thus the original would still be held in the cloud).

The "Clear Cache" option in fact does appear to do this (but I was dealing with a user yesterday for whom that clear cache option wasn't removing the original, so maybe there's a bug there), and it's possible to use it selectively (i.e. per album), so I can't argue that Adobe don't have this scenario covered. I guess it comes down to how well these options are understood by the user, and for that we need the documentation/training to be available....but I'm not sure how well that's progressing.
