adobe pop up message

When i try to view or print a pdf the message pops up and says not compatible with system. anyone know the fix for this. thanks

What exactly does the message say? Are you using Adobe Acrobat, or the free Adobe Reader? Which version? Is this a PDF file on your system, or are you trying to open it in a web browser? If so, what browser are you using?

I'm using adobe reader. The message says cannot open in protected mode and wants me to open in unprotected mode. I have not had this problem before this week.
