Linear Gradient

Hi,  I'm new to Lightroom and trying to learn how to use it.  I watched the Linear Gradient tutorial a few times.  After selecting Linear Gradient, in the tutorial, the sliders are neutral.  For me they have been adjusted, even when I am using the original picture, and the entire picture is changed as soon as I initiate the gradient.  What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

The sliders of the gradient tool (and other selective editing tools like the Adjustment Brush) do not automatically reset to neutral when you switch to a new image, i.e. they remain at the last used position. To reset all the sliders, double-click on the word "Effect" top left above the sliders.
