I've created a new layer and when I try to type into it the active box switches to a previously created layer and types the letters there.

What's happening??  (I'm on Photoshop CC 2017)

Two things.

1. Make sure you do not have a text layer selected.

2. Make sure you are not clicking to close to an existing text layer.

Both of these things will automatically connect to that layer. If you are creating a text layer too close to another text layer, try locking or turning off the visibility of that layer.

I already checked for that but that doesn't seem to be the problem.

This is probably a long shot, but it is important that you do not have an existing type layer selected when trying to create a new one, as Photoshop will insist on editing the existing type layer.

That worked! I turned off the visibility of the first layer and then created the new layer further away before dragging it in place near the first one. Thanks!!!
