Help with layers

I am trying to get an effect like the one below - gold with some red showing through.  I was wondering if there is a way to do this in Photoshop.

look like this: (I have watched many tutorials but I can't seem to find one that helps.)  I have started but as you can see I'm not doing a very good job.
