Gradent Tool Photoshop

When I try to change the gradient tool from say red to black to transparent, it will turn only to solid black.  Cannot get it accept the black to transparent format.  Have set new ones various times, but no luck..

The set up should look something like this:

With the red gradient stop active:

With the black gradient stop active:

With the black/transparent gradient stop active (color is black, opacity is zero):

When I hit ok, the gradient stays on black.  will not go from black to transparent???

Gradient Map is an Adjustment Layer (edit: or Adjustment), you probably meant to use Layer > New Fill Layer > Gradient.

In any case you do not seem to be talking about the Gradient Tool.

Let's try this shot.  Have established a black to transparent gradient as seen below.  When I enter ok, the gradient is only black and not black to transparent,  What do I do??

Again the Gradient Tool is not selected so (edit: Sorry, just noticed the Eyedropper Tool is getting selected when switching to the Editor) please create a Gradient Layer (as described above) and post a screenshot with the Layers Panel and the Gradient Fill dialog visible.

What are the Gradient Tool’s Blend Mode, Opacity, Transparency, … settings (see Options Bar)?

You're using a Gradient Fill layer, and the image looks exactly as would be expected. Black at the bottom and gradually going to transparent at the top.

What do you want the gradient to look like?

Let's try this, as I was using the gradient tool to create a selection, could not get the tool to reflect a black to transparent preset.

Began on original background by clicking gradient tool:

Then clicked to edit the gradient :

Then set the edit

Then clicked ok:

As you can see the edit did not take place as the top remains black as it is on the first shot.

Have you reset the Tool yet?

As the Gradient Layer seems to work fine I wonder if there might be a display issue, does turning off »Use Graphics Processor« in the Performance Preferences (Photoshop > Preferences > Performance > Graphic Processor Settings) and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?
