Photoshop CC 2017 memory leak or memory management problem

Windows 10 64 bit

16 GB DDR4

AMD Ryzen 7 1800X

NVIDIA 1070 GTX

Latest Windows updates, BIOS updates, etc.

I could be working for a few minutes to half an hour when this problem would start. It can happen with any sized file, or with multiple files open at once or just one. My memory usage would start creeping up, and when it reaches above 70% in the task manager, the slowdown and lag happens in Photoshop as well as the rest of my system. I can sometimes watch it reach 99%. The strange thing is that Photoshop itself is not showing anything like 60-70% usage (at idle, my computer uses about 19% of RAM), often using less than 2 GB of RAM. But I know that Photoshop is the cause of this problem as these extreme memory usage spikes happen only during Photoshop use. Closing Photoshop causes the computer to return to normal within a few seconds and returns my memory completely after about a minute.

During this time, CPU usage can go between 5% and over 50%, though it is usually on the low side.

I've had what appears to be the same issue on my Photoshop CS6. (I bought CC to avoid the issue on CS6.)

I've tried playing around with the performance settings, allocating only 50% memory to Photoshop, disabling font previews, reinstalling Photoshop CC. I have no idea what is causing this and why Photoshop can show as little as 5-10% memory usage when this happens.

Sometimes I can go a full day without this happening.

Here are two snapshots of my task manager right when this just started happening. Notice the spike in less than 60 seconds:

task manager 01.png

task manager 02.png

Notice that my memory usage, when added up, would not actually reach 92%, even though it obviously is at 92%.

Here is my system info:

Hi

I've not seen that issue here on Windows 10 , CC2017.1.1 with i3930k and 64GB RAM

Occasionally Photoshop memory use goes up if I give it some heavy work to do, and once up Photoshop does not give it back until the system needs demand it. But the use shows in both the "processes" and the "performance" pages of task manager.

If you click on Open Resource Monitor , at the bottom of the task manager performance page - does that show you where the memory is being used?

Hi AssembledVS,

We have been reported with this issue and the usage increases with CEPhtmlEngine. Please check out the steps mentioned in this article High CPU usage due to CEPHtmlEngine and let us know if that helps.

Thanks,

Dave, I will check the resource monitor if this happens again today. It doesn't always happen, but when it does, it will happen several times in a short period, requiring me to restart PS every time. Thanks!

Akash - Thank you. The screenshot is misleading in that my CPU usage during this time is usually less than 10%. I do not think that this is CPU usage related, but memory related. I will try your fix and report back if this happens again, which may be a few days.

There is some good analysis here but you need, I think, to look under the Details tab. The Processes tab does not show all processes: Windows has dozens more. The figures for ALL processes should add up.

I also have this problem in Windows 7. Photoshop will hang on to over 8GB of memory in the task manager and the only way to get the memory released is to quit the application. Closing documents does not fix the situation, only quitting the app does. It is very frustrating.

This is in itself normal behavior and as designed. Photoshop does not release memory on closing files because it slows everything down when it has to request it from the OS every time it's needed. But the memory is reused.

This is why you never set memory allocation too high in PS preferences. Always leave enough for other applications/plugins/OS processes.

However, if you see memory usage increase without any activity, you have a memory leak. That's not normal.

So what you are saying is that Photoshop now requires users to quit the app two to three times a day because the developers thought it would be a good idea to hamg on to memory for no good reason?

Not now, it has always been like that. Again, go to Preferences > Performance and make sure PS memory usage is set to a sensible amount that will not starve the rest of the system.

And you still haven't said anything about whether you see memory consumption actually increase without any PS activity. That's a memory leak. Otherwise it's normal.

It'd be super wonderful if the underlying behaviour changed so the user didn't have to take the actions described by

alex.ferrao.

Not releasing memory after closing all files seems like a defect from the user's perspective because it introduces time-consuming manual steps needed to maintain the baseline functional state.

I have not verified, but it seems possible or likely the app maxes out its memory allocation and slows down regardless of available/allocated RAM. I.e., even on a robust machine with optimized Photoshop performance settings, we see the same behaviour. Hence, there is no workaround.

And why do you think you need to? Read the replies again. This is by design, to speed up performance. What slows things down is to release memory and request it from the operating system all over again, for every new document.

The idea that you need "free RAM" is in fact a misunderstanding. Free RAM is wasted, it's not doing anything. It should all be put to work.

This is why you have a slider in Preferences to set RAM allocation. Don't set it too high, always make sure the operating system and other applications have some too. Leave 2-4 GB, and let Photoshop use (and reuse) the rest.

And of course it isn't reserving RAM at all, because you can't. What it's reserving is virtual memory, which will be swapped out to disk if another app is more memory hungry.

I use Photoshop now 25+ years, almost since its creation. I remember version 1 of the software. I have also used Photostyler for a while, long time ago.

Anyway...

For the first time in my life, after upgrading to CC 2017, I have problems with my work, serious problems with this software.

There is now a new update but I fear updating as my system may completely stop performing.

This drives me crazy, considering that I use the same MacBook Pro for the last 3 years... and the system is not performing well after the upgrade. I cannot even open a file larger than 1 Gb, it requires a scratch disk space of 50+ Gb, and many of the files I have created last year are just impossible to open due to "out of memory" problem.

My HDD is small, only 250 Gb SSD, and I physically cannot keep more than 40 Gb free space which means I just cannot work with Adobe anymore!

How is this even possible, Adobe?

This is quite insane, considering that at home I use a 10 years old MacBook Pro with Adobe CS6, and it is definitely faster than my work computer... and can open ANY file and do the job with only 8 Gb RAM and 20 Gb free space, compared to the 16 Gb RAM  I have at work and 40+ Gb free space.

I already see several of my colleagues moving to other applications that are much cheaper and WORK well. I may consider this too, and you cannot imagine my disappointment!

I really hate the way the big corporations twist the hands of their loyal clients and users to always have to upgrade and buy the laters and most expensive versions of the software.

I hope someone reads this and addresses the memory issue. People are not stupid and the competitors don't sleep, FYI.

What happens with any computer, Mac or Windows, is that your user account fills up. Nothing is ever deleted unless you go in and do it yourself. This accumulates, and at one point it's too much.

It has nothing to do with Photoshop itself. But yes, you're partly right because all these user data should be removed when an app is uninstalled. But that doesn't happen. Bridge, for example, will leave complete preview caches for as many versions as you have had installed - it can total 20 - 40 GB alone. Premiere Pro and After Effects are other big offenders here.

Clean up your user account, and this problem will go away.

Really?

Let me explain again: I turn on my computer, I have 48 Gb empty space - currently.

I open Photoshop - 2 Gb less.

I open a PSD file that is 1.3 GB, and it reads - not enough memory to open the file.

After I plug an external drive, it will open the file, slowly, and the scratch used is 40 Gb/9Gb... I guess the first is the HDD scratch used, and the second the RAM. It needs a scratch of almost 40 times the file size?!

How is here my user account involved?

Sometimes the file will open, but after few edits, I won't be able to save - not enough memory!

FYI, and I remember this from the older versions of Photoshop, the scratch file before was between 4 and 10 times the file size, and with 16 Gb RAM I was able to deal with any file size almost instantly up to Photoshop version CS6.

This is a serious issue, and I am not the only one who thinks this is insane, believe me, and I am sure I am not the only one who thinks you should change something to address this issue.

And I repeat: This is not nearly enough. You need to free up space on your system drive.

This isn't just about Photoshop. A system drive that full will get you in trouble sooner or later, since this stuff keeps accumulating. Again, it's not Photoshop doing this, but every other app that stores large amounts of user data. You should never allow a drive to fill up above 70% or so.

Scratch sizes - and Temp files in general - simply shouldn't be a consideration. Just make sure you have room for them. It's basic disk management, which is particularly important when the system drive is only 250GB.

I understand what you are saying.

But as I said - it was enough just less than 1 year ago on the same system with CS6, and I have dealt easily with bigger files and less free space. It was OK even with the previous version of CC (the one before 2017CC, not sure about the version number).

I really regret my CS6 that was absolutely enough for what I do, and it definitely managed BETTER the memory. Much much better.

That's all.

Cheers!

Scratch disk needs to be many times the file size. It has to hold the history: many copies of the file.

I agree... and I wonder what is inside the scratch file in the beginning, when the file opens? It is 50 Gb, and there is no history whatsoever!!! 90% of the layers are hidden, so they even don't have to be displayed!

This is by far the worse performance of Photoshop since version 1.

The file size on disk is much smaller than the file size in memory/scratch as it is compressed (the compression in PSD/PSB is lossless but it does exist).

The file in memory and scratch needs be opened and stored whether or not you are displaying the layers.

Smart object content all needs to be loaded , uncompressed and stored.

The scratch disk space is reserved when you start. 50 GB does not seem unusual from reports here. Maybe you need an external disk for scratch.

However, since it is also very slow maybe there's a secondary reason that makes the file very large and hard to process. New features like Smart content can do this, but of course there shouldn't be any in an old file. Confusing units on New (using Inches instead of Pixels for example) can also do this, but again not on a new file.
