Duplicate files

My Lightroom Classic, for some unknown reason, makes copies of my images. A folder that has 1314 images now has 2577 images.  Every folder has the same issue but some images will have two duplicates, another will have five, another will have none.  Can you give me any information as to why this might be happening?
