Blending Modes Not Correct

Hi everyone,

I'm currently working on a project with a quick deadline so hoping to find a fast fix. I have been using AE for about 8 years now and never had this issue till now. When I am setting a layer to 'screen' or 'add' it is still showing dark colors, to show this I applied curves and really knocked it down. What it should do is lower the transparency of the darker areas when set to one of these blending modes but you can see this isn't the case and I can't think of why it is looking like this. Does anyone have any idea how I can get the blending modes back to acting normally?

Mylenium makes good points.  Change the project settings to 16 bits.  Lose the effect.  Start messing with the blend modes.

You'll also want to mask off the portion of the explosion layer below the fireball.  I see errant pixels in it.

Without knowing any other details about your project nobody can tell you much. This looks like a bit-depth and color mananagment issue. and you are mistaken. Just using additive belnding modes does not automatically eliminate all dark colors, especially in 32bpc. It's perfectly possible that the calculations produce out-of-range values that then interact funnily or are at least displayed wrongly due to gamut issues.

Actually I was in 32bpc, going to 16bpc looks like it's worked, I don't remember it being 32 since I haven't had to work in that before. Thanks for the help

Thanks Dave, and yes this wasn't actually the shot I was working on, just quickly thrown together to try and show the issue better but I'm glad it was a simple fix
