trying to create a mock up of earth in CS6 with 3d abilities.

I have 3 layers prepared:

Background (black)

Transparent layer with "stars"

and top layer being a "sphere" that's coloured blue. (I eventually want to add in land formations etc after I figure out how to do it right)

so I want to make something like this: https://blog.spoongraphics.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/91.gif

BUT I want to be able to move it around so I can see land mass on the other side as well...

anyway, so... I have my layers set up.

I go to menu bar >3D> new mesh from layer>mesh preset>sphere...

now heres the problem....

Everytime I do this, my sphere ends up being half blue and half white.

I don't know why or how to fix it.

let alone I don't know how to add "land masses" to it, or make them go around the whole sphere so I can spin it around and see all sides
