Lasso tool won't start a new selection [Title edited by Moderator]

I'm using Photoshop CS6 and have a problem whereby when i make a lasso or other selection to perform a function that selection does not disappear when i want to make another selection.  Even if i click outside the box completely.  Can you help?

Check the settings on the Control Panel. You want the first one (New Selection) selected.

BarbBinder is rigof course - but sometimes we have a little bit different problem. Shift Key is still pressed (add to selection). If you use old keyboard it sometimes happend.
