I have just tried tethering D850 onto LR CC and it does not recognise the camera "No Camera Detected". After the wave of disappointment had passed thinking it was my tether cable I tried it with Lightroom Classic. Camera was detected. Can someone confirm that CC doesn't support tethering to the D850 yet?

Lightroom CC doesn't support tethering from ANY camera at this time.

Which Lightroom CC are you referring to?
What does Help > System Info say?

That's lightroom Classic, not CC. Adobe renamed what used to be called CC to Classic and gave the CC name to a completely new and very different app that stores all images in the cloud and has only a small percentage of the features of Classic. CC cannot tether and is unlikely to gain that feature in the near future as it does not rank high to the typical audience for CC.

So if the first one was Classic why does the help > define this second one in a very different way when I launch the actual classic program?

Please clarify your question. Your second screenshot is also a Lightroom Classic CC screen. Nothing about it is from the Lightroom CC (the new cloud-based Lightroom) version. That is why there is confusion in what you are asking.

Because the first one is an ancient version of Lightroom. It is from before the name change. It is the same program as the second screenshot, just an older version. You apparently have two different versions of the "classic" (i.e. non cloud based) version of Lightroom installed.

That's why I asked for the info shown in Help > System Info. Click on System Info and you'll see a screen full of technical info. It gives you precise version numbering so we can clear up the confusion you are currently experiencing between the old catalog-based CC and the brand new Cloud-focussed CC. You are comparing a very old version of CC with the new Classic CC.
What's shown in the first few lines of System Info?
If you're running the current version of Classic CC, you can definitely tether to the Nikon D850, which has been supported since Lightroom 7.1. Tethering with the D5 has been supported since LR 6.7.
A list of cameras that can be tethered to Lightroom Classic CC and Lightroom 6
If you're running Lightroom CC 2015.5 (version 6.4) or earlier, it will not tether.

That version should tether to the D850.

Tethering is only one of the major feature differences between CC and Classic. There are many more.

This question relates to Classic CC, not (Cloud) CC.
