Hi

I work a lot within premiere pro and after effects and do some light 3d work inside cinema 4d.

what is the best all round cpu for these programs that intel provides.

i had me eye on the 7940x but the 7900x is cheaper and seems to yield similar results.

Anyone got any tips or advice?

It going to depends on what you are doing in your workflow.  Premiere Pro and Cinema 4d have quite well mutithreaded effects and features which love lots of cores, but After Effects is not well threaded and lots of cores actually slow down performance.  For best After Effects performance the best rated CPU is a 6-core 4.7GHz i7-8700K processor.  See this testing by Puget for the numbers to verify this.  The reason it is outstanding with non-mutithreaded applications is the high basic core clock,

I will building a new workstation and I forget how many post that I have ever read about it watched bunch of videos and finally I am so confused.

I was thinking to buy i9 7940x but that CPU is really bad for after effects? If it is.. only getting render? I do not have any time issue for rendering. I just want to work on huge project like 4K-6K footage and cinemaDNG codec as a live preview.

i9 7940x is really bad choose for After Effects? Or the almost the same performance with i7 8700K? everybody is choosing i7 8700K because of price/performance?

I have been thinking to fix multi-core issue with rendergarden, if it bothers me

So could you help me out please? I am really so confused what I need to choose

Here's the deal with the i9-7940X when it comes to performance in After Effects:

1) After Effects itself does not scale well with more than about four cores and eight threads. And any workarounds to enhance multithreaded performance won't be of much if any help if the main program itself scales poorly in performance above a certain point.

2) The multithreaded clock speed of that CPU is slower than that of some otherwise lesser CPUs. After Effects in its current form scales far more with small changes in the CPU clock speed than with extremely large changes in the number of CPU processing threads.

Yes I know, its about rendering right? But I do not have any render time issue, I just curious about live preview. i9 7940x is worst from i7 8700K? And Have you ever worked with cDNG codec in AE? Its sooooooo slow with i7 8700K and curious how it is with i9 7940x

Yes, it would be worse with the 7940X than with the 8700K because renders from AE, in its present form, still scales very poorly with more than eight threads.

I found that out by doing a sample render with cDNG, using a borrowed desktop PC with 8 cores and 16 threads, and discovered that half of the PC's virtual cores went completely unused (0% utilization) during that render. This just goes to show how poorly the current version of AE is multithreaded.

What's more, with only four cores getting any load, the i9-7940X only runs at 4.1 GHz - noticeably lower than the 4.4 GHz that the i7-8700K runs at under the same conditions. Plus, the Skylake architecture is a tad less efficient than the Coffee Lake architecture.

Note that this is with standard projects, without using Cinema4D (C4D) at all. If on the other hand your projects incorporate the use of C4D, then yes, that portion of AE is well multithreaded. Thus, for AE, the 7940X is worth it only if you're going to use C4D extensively.

Thank you very much for feed backing so quickly. Let me tell you something about me. I am in video editing business and making a video with .mp4 .prores .mov footages not RED - ARRI or something like that and sometimes with cinemaDNG and the problem is starting with cDNG.

here is my PC ( 4 years old )

i7 4930K

Saberthooth x79

gtx 770

32GB RAM

Bunch Of SSD here is benchmark of pc : http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/8494271

Gaming 49%  Desktop 73%  Workstation 64% / in fact that pc is still doing my job maybe I need to upgrade GPU anyway

My job is getting bigger and thats why I want to upgrade my PC and in a few days I am really tired to reading post and watching videos which CPU is the best for video editing. Seriously I am really tired. @RjL190365 you are the one person that Ive talked with Q/A

Because all posts and videos are not replying mine questions.

In my business, I will work with huge files, 2K - 4K - 6K DNG which comes with inspire 2 x7 maybe c200 camera raw light, and cinemaDNG again. I can not work with cinemaDNG on my computer if I do not make them proxy, bunch of works.

But in Davinci Resolve, My computer is fine, fast preview really etc. I do not have any time issue with After Effects and Davinci Resolve while rendering. I just want to see quickly what I have done with footage, maybe color grading, motion track, etc. Want to see fast preview.

Bad things I am not good at Davinci Resolve and Premiere Pro. I have been using only After Effects about 9 years. And I never use cinema4d maybe 3D element.

New PC Bench: i7 8700K with i9 7940x

http://www.userbenchmark.com/PCBuilder/Custom/S67316-M347462.251565.200815.216.270794vsS59466-M35307...

the difference is big? I do not want to pay more if I will not see the difference.

or those two steps could be solution or answer my questions?

I will buy i9 7940x and I will use Adobe After Effects CS6 for better render and live preview or work with Adobe After Effects CC 2018 and export to premiere or Davinci Resolve resolve for render. Or buy 3th part plugin which is RENDERGARDEN for all CPU rendering. And will hope Adobe will fix that multi-core issue

or

I will buy i7 8700K with more 64GB RAM with high Freq like 3300 or higher. Maybe SLI with 1080 ti? and keep going to work with Adobe After Effects CC 2018 ( But I know it will not work with cinemaDNG finely, gonna work with proxy or work with Davinci Resolve for cinemaDNG

still confused, cant decided it makes me crazy 😕

so here is my another research about CPU

if both CPU are fine and if only in after effects i7 8700K is better, for future i9 7940x will be better? maybe I am gonna leave after effects to premiere or davinci resolve plus, 3D data?

or I will keep going to work with Adobe After Effects CC 2018 and export xml for render to premiere and davinci resolve?

I downloaded sample footage from Blackmagic URSA 4K and I was recoreded before 1080p both of that does not work finely with After Effects.

I did not check with i9 7940x but Is this something about cinemaDNG between After Effects?

Both footage are working fine with Davinci Resolve Finely 4k and 1080 with my old PC ( i7 4930K and 770gtx )

4K-6K RED footage are working finely with i7 8700K 1080 16gb quarter res btw

Hi, I am a beginner for video editing and 3D, and do not want to invest a lot right now considering that the graphic card prices are really high(especially in India). I was getting a pc built for my workflow on illustrator, photoshop, after effects(will start learning), and adobe dimension. I managed to get a configuration well in my budget. Can you tell me what all problems I can face with this? Following is my configuration

Intel i5 9600 KF

Asus B365M-A Motherboard

2 500 GB SATA

16 GB DDR4 3200 RAM, extendable to max 32 GB RAM

GTX 1660 DDR6 4GB Graphic Card.

Thanks in advance!

The thread is old but Intel CPUs have Quick Sync AMD CPUs do not. That being said it would be best to wait a few more months to see what Intel's 10 nm Alder Lake CPUs can do. Will Alder Lake be the best bang for the buck in 2021? Only time will tell.
