Choppy playback in premiere using proxies, 5DIV footage on iMac Pro

Hi everyone, hoping someone here might have a solution to my issue.

I'm on a base configuration iMac Pro. As some of you may know 5DIV 4K files are generally difficult files to work with. But I'm using 1024x540 ProRes proxies and playback is still choppy. Sometimes it starts out okay and then gets progressively more choppy (during realtime playback, frame drop indicator turns yellow).

I feel the iMac pro should be able to handle these proxies. Any advice would be great for a 5DIV workflow in general.
