Cant open PDF's on my laptop (IBM Think Pad) with the error message above.

You may also try the suggestion given in the following forum thread discussing similar issue:

There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired.

Also try opening other pdf files in Reader to check if it's not a file specific issue.
