I was wondering how I would go about importing GIF files into character animator, so the GIF file looks like it did prior to the import?
I am doing an “import” in the File menu and it lists .aiff, .chproj, .puppet, .ai, .jpg, .mp3, .psd, .png, .wav - so no, looks like it cannot import GIF files - .jpg was fairly recent as well. I guess you can open in Photoshop and save as PNG or JPG. So you can import a few audio formats (as sound clips), a project, a puppet, and a set of static image formats (.ai, .jpg, .psd, .png) which when imported cause a puppet to be created. The only way to import images is as a puppet. Even backgrounds are puppets.

So background images are puppets (even though they don’t have arms and legs etc) in the same way characters are puppets. (You can use transforms on puppets for example to zoom or move the background during a scene, so it is useful that they are puppets.)
