How do I add a background color to a field?

The fill color selection box a has red slash through it, and it will not accept any color I select.

What happens when you select a color? Do you use a Mac?

Yes -- I'm using a mac.  When I select a color then close the selection box, the red slash is still in the color selection box (it doesn't recognize the color selection I make).

Make sure that you uncheck the "Transparent" checkbox:

I don't have that option in my pop up menu.  I've attache a screen shot of both the colors pop up menus and the text field properties appearance menu.  Note in the appearance menu, the border color and fill color slashed; and the line thickness and line style options are both shaded and unavailable.

And (I hesitate to ask), is your field selected?

Could you let us know dot version of Acrobat installed on the machine? You may refer to the steps given in this link on how to check the version in Acrobat: Identify the product and its version for Acrobat and Reader DC

Also, try rebooting the machine once and check if that resolves the issue.
