.xmp profiles not showing up in LR Profile browser

LR Classic CC 7.3 on Windows 7. Pretty knowledgeable with LR.

I have 300+ new profiles in folders with .xmp files inside placed in C:\Users\Brett\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\Settings. Where I've been instructed to place them via Adobe, but they do not appear in Profile browser.

NOTE: These .xmp folders / files were automatically created by LR upon launch after loading them as .lrtemplate files into Develop folder... otherwise said, I had 300 new presets, placed them into C:\Users\Brett\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Develop Presets (as usual), and when I launched LR again, LR converted all of them to .xmp folders / files and placed a copy of these files into C:\Users\Brett\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\Settings. Where I understand they should be to use in the new Proflies functionality. Easy enough so far.

However, they are not showing up in the Profiles browser in Develop... just a couple appear (5), in addition to the ones that came with the release. A total of 11 folders / drop downs is all. I should be seeing 300+ color options / drop downs.

Reading through documents here, I find some say that they .xmp folders / files need to be placed where they currently are, as listed above... but I've also found that they need to be located in C:\ProgramData\Adobe\CameraRaw\Settings  which they currently are NOT (and there is no 'Settings' folder here, just 3- 'Adobe, CameraProfiles and LensProfiles' folders).

Additionally, I can not find folders / files for the few that ARE present so that I can place these in the same location.

Further, as a stop gap, I've just been using the Presets via .lrtemplate file versions on the left, and using Fader plugin to adjust intensity, which leads me to scratch my head... kind of seems redundant... I can apply a "color profile" via a Preset on the left, or (if it worked) apply the .xmp profile on the right... same result, just intensity adjustment convenience on right. What am I missing?

Above all, I'm perplexed why these myriad of folders with .xmp files are not showing up in Profiles. Makes no sense.

Any help on that, and any clarification on my redundancy (left/right) question is greatly appreciated.

User and third party presets/profiles are normally located in AppData – not ProgramData

Bring up the run dialog by pressing the windows key+R

Then follow the path to settings

C:\Users\Brett\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\Settings

The pre-installed versions are in program data. The settings folder usually contains an Adobe folder and sub-folders for each group.

Applying a profile on the right does not affect the existing slider settings.

Applying a preset on the left changes (fixes) the slider settings and profile if the preset also contains a profile.

However existing camera profiles could cause an exception. When I create user presets I distinguish those containing profiles and those that don’t. This may not be necessary if you always use Adobe Color or Adobe Standard.

Only certain profiles have the amount adjustment slider e.g. artistic, creative. The Adobe profiles and camera profiles do not.

Are you sure these are all profiles, and not presets? 300+ profiles sounds excessive for something that is still very new.

as i said, they are .xmp files.

and these .xmp files came to be when I launched LR anew after placing new presets in their location as stated above, LR recognized the new presets that were placed into the Develop folder, and converted them to .xmp copies and placed those copies into new, respective folders in Camera Raw file. I did not know that was new LR functionality, recognizing and converting templates and placing them into Camera Raw folder as .xmp files, but that's what happened.

i wish there was a knowledgeable Adobe specialist who could answer this, as I've been around the internet twice trying to find a solution.

I’m not seeing any problems. Presets should show up in the left side presets panel after re-starting Lightroom, not in the profile browser.

See my example below. The develop presets folder shows all have been converted to XMP by appending ~~ to the file name.

The settings folder shows the conversions.

The presets panel shows the presets after restarting lightroom

you are not reading my question(s) thoroughly...

1) I know how presets work and where they are located.

2) this started with simply adding new presets, then those presets being converted to .xmp files and those files placed into Camera Raw folder- where profile files are located. again, I did not know this automatic conversion functionality was part of the new LR release. and no one has addressed that yet either.

3) since they have been converted and added as .xmp files in the proper location for Proflies, then I should be able to access these new Profiles in the Profile browser, which i can't. wasn't my original purpose, but now that they're there, why not use them as Profiles instead of Presets... more control I'm told.

4) The Presets I added are fine. When I did, as a bonus, they were also added as .xmp files in the proper Profile location. Now that I want to access them (not my original intent, but since they're there, why not), I can not access them / they do not show up on the right in Profiles browser.

i did not start out with a Profile agenda... I was adding Presets. The conversion to .xmp files made me say, "great, I'll use them there too."

But its uncovered a bigger problem now that I am trying to access those .xmp files... why is LR not showing them.

Again, the Profile subject was not what started down this path... it was adding Presets, then got a dialogue box from LR saying they've also been converted to .xmp files, looking for those in Camera Raw, and saying, well that's cool, I'll use them there too. But I can't. And so the question is why are they not showing up.

Profiles and presets are both using XMP files but they are not interchangeable in the UI.

I believe Camera Raw will not sync with LR Classic.

that is true... so why did LR auto convert the .lrtemplates to .xmp files and place them into Camera Raw folder? so that I added a Preset to my Develop folder as always, upon restart LR alerts me to it being converted to a .xmp, and now I have a copy of that .lrtemplate file as  well as a new .xmp file, but it is located in the Camera Raw folder. So, I have a copy of the original .lrtemple file, and a new .xmp copy in the Camera Raw folder. Completely separated.

If its not to access as a Profile, then why did this auto conversion happen? Why do I now have the original .lrtemplate file AND a new .xmp file? And this happened automatically. This is at the heart of what I'm trying to figure out.

You have the .xmp files because that is what presets (and profiles) are now based upon. You still have the old .lrtemplate files as well for compatibility reasons. If you would ever want to go back to a version earlier than 7.3, you'd need those old presets again.

makes sense. so now i have a .lrtemplate version of the Preset, as well as a new .xmp version. both located in separate locations.

so following along, can that new .xmp be accessed as a Profile? if no, that solves the mystery. just would like to know why not. if yes, then if is where it needs to be for Profiles, per Adobe's instructions, why is LR not showing it in Profile browser?

and if its because this version of LR is not "seeing" / updating / syncing with anything in Camera Raw folder, that's fine, I just want to know.

p.s. Upon closer inspection, this automatic conversion process created .xmp files for some of the .lrtemplate files, not all of them.

As example, 5 .lrtemplate files in a folder, but only 4 had .xmp files created of them.

More oddity.

I think unless someone technologically-oriented at Adobe addresses, I may be with all the information I'm going to get on this.

Presets and profiles are two separate things, despite the fact that they are both .xmp files. So no, presets can not be accessed like profiles (and vice versa).

There are some problems with the conversion. Some old presets are not converted for various reasons.

Camera Raw (files) not syncing with this version of LR, if correct, might be the answer to my question.

if that's true, then it takes me mostly out of my misery... except for the question... for the Profiles that are showing up, where are they, and why can't I drop all these .xmp files there so that I can now see them in the Profiles browser...?

I think Adobe is investing resources in the LRCC eco system (cloud based) and sync between mobile devices. They have said publicly that LR Classic will not get any new sync features (smart previews from collections will continue) as the mainly desktop product will focus on speed and other performance improvements.

makes sense. not good for me, but makes logical explanation.

i think you are closer to explaining this than not. thank you for your time and words.

still baffles me the auto conversion process... if what you say is true, just eliminate that so it does not bring all of this to my attention. if not for that, i would have never gone down this path. only because i was alerted to essentially "you now have .xmp files too!"

thank you again.
