Mac? First suggestion would be to turn off GPU performance.

In the future, please state your exact InDesign version and operating system platform and version.

It looks like there is some sort of re-draw issue (as Bob suggested, the GPU performance might be the culprit) or font corruption. How old is the version of Arial you are using? Have you tried sending this file to someone else that has the same font to see if it's limited to your machine or the document itself?

Absolutely fascinating. GPU error or not, one wonders what exactly is happening here.

It can't be the code for the straight lines they stick out of, as there are only two points for the left and right of those horizontals and there is no in-between point to go rogue. It looks as if a center line from the character skeleton is not capped by a proper miter limit ...

Except fonts do not have a center line. They are defined by their outlines, and there is zero data left from the original design skeleton (if there was even any to begin with).

Exactly. Maybe there is a stroke applied with center alignment?
Then I would look for a different value for miter limit of the stroke.

Some examples:

Oh wow, thanks! My wild guess turns out to be correct after all. I had no idea ID would behave like this under extreme circumstances – fortunately, what the OP got here is pretty far from standard practices.

So (a) turn off any stroke applied to the text, and (b) if you want to make some Arial text bolder, just use Arial Bold ...

Hi Jane,

below some variations. Note what happens with other parts of the glyphs if miter limit is 1 or 2. Especially see into character "R".
