LR Starts Different Version of PS

When I start Adobe PS CC 2018 directly by clicking the App it starts as version 19.1.4. However, when I start it from LR Classic CC by right-clicking on an image using "Edit In" -> "Edit in Adobe Photoshop CC 2018..." it starts as 19.1.3. As far as I can tell I only have one version of PS on my system. I have tried reinstalling both PS and LR to clear this. Does anyone have any idea what the problem is?

Hi jerryn,

We're really sorry for all the trouble. Well' there's no way that you can keep both Photoshop 19.1.4 & 19.1.3 version installed on one computer at a time.

Could you please let us know what all version of Photoshop and Lightroom installed on your machine?

I could only find one PS version on my Mac in the Apps folder and it is version 19.1.4. I could not find version 19.1.3 anywhere. I did not notice this until a plug-in (TKActions) would only load if I started PS directly (19.1.4). Then I realized that I was starting another version with LR. Hope this helps

Could you please open Photoshop via Lightroom Edit-in option and go to Photoshop > help menu > system info and provide the dialogue information in your next reply.

Do you run Time Machine?

IIRC -I (a PC user) have read forums where Lightroom was loading 'old' versions of Photoshop from Time Machine backups.

That forum article article you mentioned was a major clue. I do run Time Machine but it is not normally active. I had forgotten that I also have applications backed up on an external RAID drive which is also where the LR files and catalog are stored. Looking there, I found the older version of PS (19.1.3). So I uninstalled both PS and LR and then deleted the older version of LR on the backup RAID drive. Then I reinstalled LR and PS on my main SSD. Now I only have the newer version of PS CC 2018 (19.1.4). However, now I cannot start PS from LR—I get a popup that says “The file could note be edited because Adobe Photoshop CC 2018 could not be launched". When I click OK PS does not appear but even though I had selected “Edit Original” it creates a -Edit.psd copy of the file! Any idea how to “relink” PS into LR?

You are part the way fixing the problem.

If I had read your report in detail I might have seen this line that gives a clue to the 19.1.3 version location-

Try the 'Mac OS' solutions at 'Edit In Photoshop' command missing

“Edit Original” it creates a -Edit.psd copy of the file!

What file-type is the photo you are opening in PS with the [Ctrl+E] shortcut?

Normally a raw file (NEF, CR2,ARW, etc) does not give you a choice dialog, but opens directly. If you get a choice with a raw file, then your versions of LR and PS do not have compatible Camera Raw versions. Are you sure you have PS 19.1.4 and LR-Classic 7.3.1 ?

Only JPG, TIFF, PSD type files will give the options that include "Open Original".

Just wanted to let you know that all is well now. The final fix for this problem was to uninstall both LR and PS including preferences then to reinstall everything. Finally back to normal. Thanks to everyone for their help!
