InDesign Crashes when changing margins

I wish to change my default margins from 12.7mm to 10mm for all future documents. With no documents open when I change the margins InDesign crashes.

Has anyone come across this before and is there a fix for it? Windows 7 64 bit. I have deleted my preferences. Uninstalled and re-installed InDesign and it still happens.

Hi Michael / Luis,

We are very sorry you ran into this issue.

Michael, Service Pack 1 is a Windows update which is essential to run CC applications on Windows 7. Please check if your system has that installed (You can check that in the system information). If yes, I would request you to follow below-mentioned steps:

1) Preferences Reset

  • Close all Adobe applications.
  • Go to Locations :
  • C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Adobe
  • C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Adobe.
  • Delete or Rename InDesign folders.
  • Launch InDesign from CC

2) If it still does not help try uninstalling and reinstalling InDesign.

Luis, if you are using Windows you may try same steps, for MAC please follow the steps mentioned below:

1) Preferences Reset

  • Close all Adobe applications.
  • Go to Locations:
  • ~/Library/Caches
  • ~/Library/Preferences
  • Delete or rename Adobe InDesign and com.adobe.indesign
  • Launch InDesign from the CC

2) Uninstalling and reinstalling InDesign

Hope this helps!

Regards,

Srishti

Hi Srishti

I have Windows SP1 installed. I followed step 1 without any success. I then followed step 2 and again I still have the same issue.

Any other suggestions?

Michael

Hi Srishti,

are there other known circumstances or factors that trigger the crash?

As I wrote in reply 4 above I cannot see a crash when changing the margins on the default document preset.

From my German InDesign CC 2018.1 on Windows 10 (1803) :

Margins set to 10 mm, no crash:

Margins set to 0 mm, no crash:

  • Close all open documents.
  • Go to Layout > Margins and Columns
  • Change Margins and Click OK
  • It will crash

Ah. This way. Now I can see the crash as well.

Then the screenshots I posted in reply 9 are a valid workaround.

Uwe

Hi together,

tried this with InDesign CC 2018.1 13.1.0.76 on Windows 10 version 1803. German version.
No problem to change the document preset [Standard] . My margins are now 10 mm.

Sorry. I cannot recreate the problem…

Uwe

Adobe (through computer-sharing) removed InDesign CC 2018, then installed InDesign CC 2017, and from there updated again to InDesign CC2018. Problem solved. Thanks to all for your responses.
