I have discovered that when I want to move out of LR into Photoshop with an image I cannot do this. All external editors/plug-ins are greyed-out, despite PS being in the LR preferences. When I have tried to reinstall the plug-ins I keep getting an error message. This was all working one and a half months ago when I last used this particular laptop and I can only think that installing a recent upgrade has caused this. What can I do to remedy this ( note; I am not a “technical“ user of computers, so simplicity would be appreciated!).

On possible reason for grey out the external editing is when you work with Smart Previews and the original isn't reachable (ex. the external hard drive in which the photos are stored is not connected).

Which error message do you get?

“An error occurred while attempting to load this plug-in”.

Please check your preferences > presets tab... do you have Store with this catalog checked or unchecked.
When you are in Photoshop, are the plugins available? Under About Photoshop in the upper left corner About Plugins, are your plugins listed and available?
