Oil Paint greyed out, but cannot tick OPEN CL box

I want to use the oil paint filter but it is greyed out. I have searched here and found several posts about this but none of the answers help.

My Photoshop is up to date, as is my graphics driver. My graphics card is an Nvidia GeForce GT 640 and Nvidia assure me that it supports OPEN CL v1.2. My operating system is windows 10 - 64 bit.

If I go to edit>>preferences>>performance>>advanced settings The box that says use Open CL is not ticked and it is also greyed out so I cannot tick it.

This is driving me crazy. Can anyone help please?

Try installing the latest Nvidia device driver for your GT 640 Drivers | GeForce July 24, 2017 see if Open CL can then be checked in your Advance GPU settings in Photoshop preferences...

Thank you very much. My graphics card driver is supposed to automatically update but I suppose it must have gone wrong somewhere. Instead of taking the custom install, I chose advanced and checked the clean install box. It took some time, but eventually installed OK and I can now use the oil paint filter.

Hi,

I have the exact same issue.

I have tried a nvidia and an AMD video card (gt710 and a Radeon 7400)

Both are in the compatible list.

But I can not click the OpenCL box (greyed out)

And the 'oil paint' plug-in does not work and keeps saying the drivers are out of date.

Both Adobe and the drivers are fully up to date.

I have tried (the few) suggestion available but still have had no joy.

Please help............

Hello. Write to your graphics card support dept. Saying that you cannot choose OPEN CL in Photoshop and see what advice they give you.

I solved mine by sending an e-mail to Nvidia support, although my driver was up to date. They sent a message back with a link to a download, saying I should do a "clean install" I followed the simple instructions, and now Photoshop works perfectly.

If none of the suggestions listed here work for you, AND your are trying to apply artistic effects to a 16-bit photo, try saving a copy as an 8-bit photo and try again. It worked for me in PS 2018. There are also other filters that do not work in 16-bit, in addition to artistic. I found this fix in a non-Adobe post from 2012. It still applies.

Have you tried re-installing the latest ADM device diver you use for your Display adapter. I have had to re-install my Nvidia Quadro driver from Time to time after installing some Windows Updates. Open CL would be grayed out in Photoshop Advance Graphic Setting till I re-install the Quadro driver I had been using. When I did even it it was not the latest driver available once Again OpenCL was Available again in Photoshop Advance Graphics settings. This has not happen lately with new Windows 10 updates but happen often with Windows 10 update in the past. Its the main reason I no longer install Windows 10 Preview installs.
