Personally, I would load the file in Photoshop, masking out the background and save as PSD or TIFF file.
Thanks, but is this the only way? I don't have Photoshop you see... Seems a bit silly to have to buy it for the occasion :-)

first refine your path you are drawing, then open your Layers Panel.
There should be two objects:
The frame holding the image.
A polygon that is the path you are drawing.
Select the frame holding your image.
Select the polygon.
Do Paste Inside.

You can do as Laubender suggests, if you do not have Photoshop (or any other modern image editor) at your hands. It's just more complicated to handle with complex shapes. You create a irregularly shaped image frame.
And yes, if you have only Indesign at your disposal, Laubender's solution is the best you have.
