Cannot run .chm files locally

Software and .chm files are installed together on their local drive. Clicking the TOC contents gets a Page Cannot Be Displayed message. I know the workaround for the network, but everything is local.

Does the name of the .chm file or the path to the file contain a hash symbol (#)? That would cause the problem you've described. For more information, see:

The chms are installed with our software. All components are installed locally into the same folder where the software is installed, no network is involved. Also there is no # symbol anywhere in the path.

You say there are CHM files (plural) so can we assume you have a merged CHM file? Can we also assume that if you launch each CHM separately from outside the application that the topics display as required? If all these assumptions are correct, the problem has to be with the call from the application. Can you post this?

It is a merged CHM file. And if launched outside the application, it doesn't run either. Clicking the TOC contents gets a Page Cannot Be Displayed message.

Lots of questions...

Can you view the topics if you:

1) Access them through the Search or Index tab?
2) Open a slave .chm file and click the entries in its TOC?
3) Browse to your output folder and open the individual HTML topic files in Internet Explorer?
4) Transfer the .chm files to a different PC?

Do you see any error messages when you compile? Does MJ's Help Diagnostics report any problems with the compiler components on your build machine? Can you view the contents of other .chm files OK? Which version of Windows are you running?

If you feel comfortable sending a couple of your .chm files to me, I'd be more than happy to take a closer look.

Are all the topics that don't display in the same merged CHM? If so, it is time to look inside the look inside the TOC of the master CHM to see what's there. Tell us the path to the CHM. It should be like "myhelpfile.chm::/myhelpfile.hhc"

Yes to all of these questions. We have narrowed it down to one customer. We feel that it is something in the customer's environment since no other customer has these problems.
