Trimming clips help required

Hi

When we edit or trim a clip in a compilation of small videos - a window pops up showing the image of the section we are trying to trim - this covers the "timeline" of the clips and we cant see what we are doing. We used to be able to just click on relevant clip and drag it into position. Can someone explain what this window is in aid of and how do we see where we are trying to edit if it covers everything.
