PremierePro Not Responding 95% of the time.

I try to use PremierePro and it's impossibly slow. Most of the time I get "not responding". I can't edit properly when I can't even use the program. I end up using cheap video editing software because they don't take 5 hours to do a simple edit. Is there a way to fix this? Even with proxies, it still takes forever, and exportingg a video takes like all day. Am I doing something wrong? How much ram do you need to run it smoothly?
