Unable to trim heads and tails

I made two cuts in a video and audio, then took out the middle. I tried to move the unlinked audio over and keep getting a blocked on the audio. Whether trim or ripple I can not move the audio over although there is room from the deleted video and audio.

What can I be doing wrong as I know this should be able to do?

I think I solved it. There is a drop down on the ripple edit tool and you can find the rolling edit tool. You can link or unlink clips, lock on of the tracks and the rolling edit tool lets you do a J cut or L cut.

After selecting the roller tool I double clicked on the edit point and the trim window comes up. Here I can tap just one frame at a time to roll the edit forward.

If you are just using the Red Trim Arrow you get the blocked error.

You video is not linked to the audio hence the blocking.

I want to do an L cut and move the audio ahead. I need to separate the audio that is in sequence from the video. If I link them I will not be able to move the audio separately.

Clips can be linked and still perform a L or J cut.

There is a button next to the snap button in the top left corner of the timeline that says Linked Selection: uncheck that.

OH, OK I see what's happening. The linked clips does not seem to be what I need. When I move the second clip and give space I can then move the first clip. I can not roll the first clip over the next clip.

Is there a way to overwrite the next clip?

Is there a way to use the key board to advance the first clip one frame at a time over the next clip?

Sorry I did not catch this earlier.

In your screenshot you cannot do any J or L cut as they are not trimmed.

Those little white triangles at end and beginning of the clip tell you they are the full clip, there are no handles.

Remember I deleted the center clip so I have extra footage. I think this happens with the Red Trim Arrow but not the roller tool.

Thanks for everyone's help, I am transitioning from AVID to Premiere and I am trying to do the same things.

Last thing I am trying to learn is to play the edit in the trim mode as I advance one frame at a time to get a feel for the edit.

Is there a way to keep playing around the in and outs without leaving the trim window?

yes I hit the play in to out but it closes the window and you have to double click on the edit point to get the trim window up again to advance the frame one more time. In Avid you can loop it and keep trying one frame at a time.

Saves a lot of time and you can get a feel for the right edit.

I was hitting the "play in to out button" not the "play" button. This will close the window. It does play fine with the Play button.

I use the spacebar.

You can modify the duration in the preferences of the program, playback, Preroll> Postroll.

It's the same time as when you press Shift + K, but here is a cycle

The trimming window allows you to make cuts of 1 or 5 frames, forward or backward, either using the mouse or the keyboard.

With the mouse, click on -5 -1 or +1 +5

With the keyboard it would be:

Ctrl + Left --- Ctrl + Right                            1 frame

Ctrl + Shift + Left --- Ctrl + Shift + Right    5 frames

And play to see the result

No, the playback is cyclical, it ends and it starts uninterrupted, it stops in the clipping when it stops, and the clipping window appears. By default it is 5 seconds.
