All edits missing from Develop Module but show in film strip icon

So I'm gonna start off that I'm not that techy so my lingo may be off.  I cannot access any of my photos "edits" in Lightroom anymore from what it seems like the last three or so imports.  The film strip icons show crop and develop but the develop module has all setting still at zero.  The crop shows up in the develop module but not the edits with the sliders.  When the photos first load you can visually see the editing on the photos, then they disappear. Help please! I have searched this forum and many others but don't feel as if my issue has been presented or solved.  I'm hesitant about spending hours again developing to come back and find that they are all gone.  Thanks for anyone's help.

This sound to me like you are saving metadata to the files, removing them from the Catalog, and then re-importing them a second or third time.

Could you be more specific about your workflow?

Photos should only ever be imported ONCE, and never removed from the Catalog. Removing from the Catalog will delete all the editing steps and history, and when re-imported all the sliders are reset to zero. The editing you may see is the limited metadata from any saved metadata XMP file.

Can you post your System Info from the Help Menu > System Info...

Thanks for the quick reply.

That could be the case.  The lightroom thing is a bit over my head and truthfully I don't even want to bother with the organizational aspect of the software.  I just want to edit photos and export them for printing and posting to social media.  I usually do the organizational stuff on the computer myself creating labeled folders that make sense to me.

My workflow

I click the + symbol next to Folders in the Library module, find the folder with my photos, import them all and delete the ones I don't want.  I then edit them all in Develop module, then remove the folder and close down the program and computer.  I do back ups most every time I close down the program.

I have not changed this aspect of my workflow in three years and all of the previous years of files still have the edit files attached or visible.  I've literally check every folder.

Yes your workflow is totally wrong! despite the fact you may have been using it for "years".

You should make proper use of the catalog system.

Like your iPhone Contact list- why would you enter a new contact to send a message, and then delete the contact from your phone entirely? Makes no sense to do the same in Lightroom.

Please update your understanding of the Lightroom DAM system.

At the very least read the free LR Classic Quick Start eBook from- https://www.lightroomqueen.com/blog/

Sorry, but Your problems are of your own making.

Thanks josh...

I guess it was a little bit of "tough love" in my reply, but I have learnt that with Lightroom it is the "All or Nothing" approach that has to be taken.

I have imported every (camera) photo that I have in my system, and I do mean "EVERY PHOTO". The result is that my one catalog contains ALL my photos back to my start with Digital, and ALL my edits done to all photos.

Using Keywords, flags and Labels (edit: forgot Collections), is the way to make best use of the Catalog that should be your 'Master' database for all your photo work.

Please do not 'remove' photos from the Lightroom Catalog (permanent deletions excepted)- you will be so much happier .
