I have an new Sony A7riii (been using Canon). My files will not import to lightroom now. Ive updated the program. What do I need to do?

That camera has been supported since Lightroom CC version 7.1.
Which version are you running?
In Lightroom, click Help > System Info

how do i update to that version?

The version you're running is over 3 years old.
Go to the Cloud desktop app (Cloud symbol in your operating system notification area) and download and install the latest Lightroom Classic CC. Should be version 8.0.
