I've imported photos from my camera and some from a friend's dvd that have the same file names. When I try to rename (under library) it's grayed out.
I have the little ! in the top corner of the photo. When I click on it, I get the message "the file xxxx-749.DNG is associated with another photo in the catalog". I don't know how to resolve this.

UGH - sounds messy. Perhaps if you sort on your most recent import in the catalog panel in the left most column of the Library module you might want to remove the images that you want to rename? What is it that you want to accomplish?

All of the images were from a vacation. Some I added from a friends dvd so apparently that is the problem. I want to keep all of them. Maybe it doesn't even matter as I've already made a book. It's just that I like to keep my library intact. Thanks for your help

This sounds like you imported the photos from the DVD via using the ADD import option. If so, then the ! icon is because the DVD is not inserted into your DVD reader, and also you can't rename photos on a DVD. What you want to do is move the photos to your hard disk somewhere — insert the DVD and then move the photos to your hard disk and then re-link in Lightroom — and then everything should be fine.
