Attachments to gmail

I have lost the facility to open an attachment to a draft email to check I am sending the correct item(s). I use to get a choice & always opted for Acrobat reader - now the items goes direct into downloads which I can access at the top of my screen.I believe I may have pressed an incorrect box - can someone advise please.

Go to Tools - Options, scroll down to Applications, enter "pdf" into the search field and change the selection associated with the items that show up to "Always Ask".
