What version of InDesign (exactly)? What operating system verison?

If it happens on only one file, there could be corruption. Try saving as IDML and reopening:

Clean corrupt files by exporting to .IDML or .INX

If it happens on more than one, you may need to restore your preferences:

Set preferences in Adobe InDesign

I have MAC OS 10.13.6 and Indesign CC 14.0.1

It was doing this before the upgrade and hoped it would fix it but it didn't.

But did you try the options I listed, depending on whether it's one file or all files?

Hi Sue:

It's working fine on my Mac with 14.0.1.

When you upgrade to a new version, InDesign will import the preferences from the old version—unless you tell it not to—so the past issue may have traveled to the new version.

Start with Steve's link to reset preferences. If that doesn't work for you, you can move on to deleting the InDesign cache folder. Steps are at the bottom of the first post in this file:

CC 2018 InDesign—Don't Import previous settings and preferences
