Can someone tell me how or give me a tutorial link that explains how I can monitor the # of visits to someone else's blog?

You could hitch a ride on the mighty Alexa engine, like this

Yeah but that simply shows what alexa analyzes. I want to be able to actually analyze the stats and store results. Nothing too in depth... just number of unique visits.

You should realize that, in the web traffic world, you will have to rely on Alexa's or somebody else's technology. If you don't want such information from a third party, then you will have to rely on the stats from the blog itself. However, the majority of blogs are not equipped, or will not be willing, to give you that information.

I want to be able to actually analyze the stats and store results
With a little effort you can extract the stats you need from the Alexa request. There is an alternative. Search the web for a web-traffic webservice. Don't be surprised if you encounter Alexa again.

Good luck. As I said, you can always fall back on mining the data out of cfhttp.filecontent.

Keep in mind that statistics of another web site or blog is private data and usually inaccessible unless that site/owner has provided access to stats in someway or other, which is usually done for some reason that enhances the owner's web site, either visually, such as a widget, serving up ads, or general reporting such as Google Analytics. The owner of the website/blog usually places some JavaScript on the page which calls the monitoring agent on another server.

If you're placing ads on the target website and you want to know how many visits, you'll either have to trust what the owner is reporting to you, get access to the web logs (assuming they are not doctored), or create your own type of script that the owner places on the blog that calls back to your site each time the page is visited. You could also use an older method where the owner links to your image on your site, similar to a script, except that the image URL calls your ColdFusion template, such as <img src="yoursite.com/image.cfm">, then in your image.cfm, you track the statistics on the hit and deliver up your image using the cfcontent tag.

Yes I think the jscript is the way to go. I need a good tute or the right search phrase for hotscripts because I can't find anything that is educating me appropriately. I don't want to go the image route.

Of course this tracker will be consented by the blog owner. They have asked me to do it so I'm trying to help them out.

Not very helpful at all. Please don't respond unless you can show me a tutorial on how to track traffic on a site please. That's what I am trying to figure out.

I am being helpful, but you don't seem to understand. You say that flyfishchick.com has "asked me to do it [monitor its web traffic] so I'm trying to help them out.".Then you should realize that the usual, and most reliable, way to monitor a site's traffic is to do it on the site itself. Either using code, for example, to count distinct IPs or sessions, or by analyzing the log files.

A variation on this theme is to plant a snippet of html code on every page on the site. External "helpers" like you or specialist tracking sites can then use a tracking application to calculate the site's traffic. That is what you can achieve with Feedburner, free of charge. C_wigginton already hinted at this. If, as you say, flyfishchick.com has solicited your help then they should only be too glad to give you access to the information you need.

You really don't need to be in this forum, unless you seek advice on the Coldfusion code to count visitor sessions or IPs -- on a Coldfusion web site! A Google search will turn up the tutorials you seek.

I hear you. The reason I posted here is because I wanted to find an alternative to javascript and was hoping someone may have a cfml solution. Basically... I want to do something similiar to this: http://www.hitsunlimited.com/fish/100topsalt/100top.html

They put a little widget on a fishing site and then the people have data fed to that widget to show where they rank.
