1. Re: Nikon D700 Announced
Wade S Zimmerman Jul 2, 2008 3:06 PM (in response to Allen Wicks)If the mage quality is as good as the D3 I will get it.
I'll have two bodies each with one of the PC Lenses. -
2. Re: Nikon D700 Announced
Fred Nirque Jul 2, 2008 9:50 PM (in response to Allen Wicks)No reason that the image quality won't be identical.
The main differences will be in the shutter quality, the battery power, the build quality, the weather-sealing, the two CF card slots, the frame rate and other small "pro" bits like the viewfinder shutter on the D3. The tradeoff is no pop-up flash on the D3.
To me the viewfinder shutter, weather-sealing and the battery oomph (technical term!) are worth the extra for the D3 for the rigours I put the camera through, but the D700 would be an ideal backup to an existing D3. -
3. Re: Nikon D700 Announced
Wade S Zimmerman Jul 2, 2008 10:36 PM (in response to Allen Wicks)Yes I woulld get it for a back but for now I ould use it as a second body with another PC lens on it the one I would probably mount would be the çàmm which would allow me to use it to take the ocassional portrait I take.
I think the more ideal replacement for it would be the D"x or what ever they will call it.
I have already made profit from the D" so I am happy and it will continue and will py for the replacement.
BTW the 28mm PC lens is quite a lens. I am here in Paris and it has done all the work so fatr and has handeled it quite easily.
I love the idea that you can focus 9 inches fro, the subject. -

Fred Nirque Jul 3, 2008 5:33 AM (in response to Allen Wicks)Fresh out of money for now, but the SB-900 is what got my attention as well.... -
6. Re: Nikon D700 Announced
Allen Wicks Jul 3, 2008 9:25 AM (in response to Allen Wicks)What Bonnie said. The SB-800 system is great, but the improvements in the SB-900 look way cool. I will buy one as soon as they are available and maybe try the new battery pack as well.
The SB-800 performance improved when using 5 batteries but the SB-900 alleges to beat that with 4 batteries. Since chargers typically charge 2 or 4 at a time, charging 5 batteries made the charging process a bit unwieldy when only using a single flash unit. -
7. Re: Nikon D700 Announced
(bonniej) Jul 3, 2008 11:44 AM (in response to Allen Wicks)... not to mention all the buttons are now on the back.. no trying to get to the correct menu by continuosly hitting the same button. So more ease of use in addition to a great system. -
8. Re: Nikon D700 Announced
Fred Nirque Jul 3, 2008 2:01 PM (in response to Allen Wicks)Battery technology has come a long way - when I started with the SB800 I was using 1600 mA/h ni-mh AA's, now I've got 2900 mA/h units. Changing batteries during a shoot doesn't happen anymore, and though I still use the fifth battery, it doesn't seem to make as much difference to the charging rate as it used to compared with four.
Given the versatility of the crop factor, I think I would still go for a D300 as a backup camera to the D3. The only thing about all of this is that not only was the D700 a bit of a surprise masked by all the speculation of a D3x, but here in Oz Nikon dropped the price of the D3 by over $1,000 from its introduction price at the same time as introducing the D700. Thankfully I've taken a few photographs in the few months I've had the D3 that have more than compensated the difference and that I would not have taken had I not had the that camera.
At least the intro price of the SB-900 is about the same as the 800, and the 800 has been dropped immediately. -

shoot me now-d3u3se Jul 3, 2008 2:13 PM (in response to Allen Wicks)>and the 800 has been dropped immediately
The price has dropped or it has been dropped altogether from the lineup? -
10. Re: Nikon D700 Announced
Fred Nirque Jul 3, 2008 2:37 PM (in response to Allen Wicks)It disappeared from my supplier's website listings immediately the SB-900 was posted. Obviously he no longer has stock of the SB-800 - those that do will probably have them at bargain runout prices.
Nikon always seem to replace their flashes completely with a new model, unlike the cameras which always seem to "continue to be available" (though why that is I can't figure). -

18. Re: Nikon D700 Announced
Ramón G Castañeda Jul 26, 2008 7:25 PM (in response to Allen Wicks)I think this is Nikon's smartest marketing move ever!
They're placing the D300 well below in price that most consumers will feel compelled to step up "a notch" while steering clear of the much higher priced D3. It's obvious that it is the D700 THE camera they want to sell in very large numbers. They will probably succeed too. -
19. Re: Nikon D700 Announced
Hudechrome-sd9sPI Jul 27, 2008 7:45 AM (in response to Allen Wicks)Well, the D700 is $3600, the D3 is available at Newegg for $4900. $1300 will make a difference for some, but for me, I would do the D3.
I don't know if the Newegg price includes a battery, but those who have one can check the "In the box" pix on Newegg's site

Hudechrome-sd9sPI Jul 27, 2008 11:42 AM (in response to Allen Wicks)Amazon is where I saw it. Usually, they are a bit under. Thanks for the correction.
It's looking more and more like I'll first go to a PC lens, especially for the tilt feature. I'm reasonably happy with the basic output of the D80, and for my uses, I want sharp near to far. Looking at the 45mm. -

R Popham Jul 27, 2008 2:17 PM (in response to Allen Wicks)>Maybe you saw the one with the 24-120 kit.
Yes, the kit with the 24-120 lens is around $3500. And the D700 is still in stock at B&H (as of 6pm EST). I was on the Best Buy website the other day, and it's listed there as well -- but not in stock yet. So it seems that Nikon plans to make these widely available through a number of different outlets.
I thought it would be impossible to get a D700 for months, like the other recent Nikon releases. It took me six months to get my hands on a D200 back when that camera was released.
By the way, the D200 is selling for $1,000 on the B&H website. If you don't have to have the latest and greatest, it's a helluva camera for that price. -

26. Re: Nikon D700 Announced
(Donald_Reese) Jul 27, 2008 3:52 PM (in response to Allen Wicks)I am having second thoughts about telling my friend about the D2x i had a shot at. i figured it was old technology, so i gave my friend the guys number. he borrowed it for the weekend, came over with it, and it has 10,000 shutter actuations on it, and it is flawless. we tested the d200 side by side with it and it has better noise characteristics by a good bit at 800 and 1600. at a 1000 bucks i should of snatched it up as a second body. -

Nick Decker Aug 24, 2008 6:42 AM (in response to Allen Wicks)Hi, Zog. The latest rumors that I've seen have Nikon coming out with what may be called the D90. Again, same sensor as the D3 and D700, but an even lesser build than the D700. Supposedly a consumer-oriented camera. -

33. Re: Nikon D700 Announced
R Popham Aug 24, 2008 2:35 PM (in response to Allen Wicks)I agree with Ho. The D90 will probably have the same sensor as the D300 -- similar body/build as the D80. -

Nick Decker Aug 25, 2008 9:31 AM (in response to Allen Wicks)Ha! Good find, Larry.
>"My Nikon contact tells me their R&D people are now working on a system that eliminates the photographer altogether. Nikon's customer research has discovered that when a photographer takes a great image, they claim all the credit. But when a photographer takes a bad image, they blame the camera.

39. Re: Nikon D700 Announced
Fred Nirque Aug 25, 2008 1:54 PM (in response to Allen Wicks)Maybe not so far-fetched - I've never liked the way that Nikon's NEF raw file format is such a strictly guarded proprietary secret and that the only way to fully access it is through their painfully slow and annoying Capture NX software.
For instance ACR cannot access the D-Lighting or lens aberration corrections that one selects in the D3/D700 camera menu at the time of shooting, so those have to be recreated manually in ACR later. I can only assume that this is because Nikon didn't release the code for these to Adobe and as such are already taking a portion of my images away from my full ownership if I choose (and who wouldn't?) not to buy NX as well.
Although Nikon "gave" me Capture NX with the D3, they introduced the new Capture NX2 a few days later, and in true Nikon style there is no upgrade path - you have to buy the full program even if you already have an earlier version.
I cannot understand why Nikon hasn't figured that every photographer who is serious enough about it to buy a D3/D700 would most likely have Photoshop as well, and that they should be working with Adobe, not against them, to get the best for their customers. It would seem that is not one of Nikon's priorities either.
