Hudechrome-sd9sPI Sep 4, 2008 8:35 AM (in response to badchess)We had the same thing in Portland, but some suspected the forest fires. That didn't make sense as the fires were well east of Portand and sunsets look west (Duh!) -

These are selections from the Times Landscape Photographer of the Year competition. HDR and tone mapping seem to be popular!

Wade S Zimmerman Oct 27, 2008 7:23 AM (in response to badchess)Well that all looks familiar and outdated! And non of it looks like Landscape.
A bit behind the Times!
Or if you seen it once you've seen it a thousand times. -
9. Re: I thought sunsets lately were nice
Ann Shelbourne Oct 27, 2008 8:21 AM (in response to badchess)I don't agree with Wade.
To me the photographs are redolent of the English Landscape in its many moods but I wouldn't necessarily expect an untutored New Yorker to relate to them!
Thank you for posting them JJ they certainly resonated with me but then I do have a rather deeper knowledge and appreciation for things English than it appears that Wade has. -

Does that even remotely look like England? -

Ann Shelbourne Oct 27, 2008 2:16 PM (in response to badchess)I LIVED in England most of my life and JJ, who posted the Links, does too. OzPeter used to also.
Perhaps I just don't see things from a New York city-dweller's perspective who has spent a minimal amount of time there and seen very little of the country and who also has no knowledge of, or appreciation for, anything outside a rather narrow-minded frame of reference.
In other words, your opinion on this subject Wade, has no validity. -

The one of the five platforms(?) in the water and the wave hitting the lighthouse probably my favorites. -

Thanks it is funny how this type of negative sentiment kind of works for me! The last tie you said something like this Wallpaper inquired about some of photos. If they run one of them then it will probably lead to some work perhaps in the UK.
Anyway I just got my Nikkor 85MM PC lens and it looks like it is very excellent and I think it will come in handy with my upcoming trip to the UK.
Then I probably will be making another trip to Paris for some work. But you have definitely inspired me to Chunnel to see my friend and client Stefania, she is doing a in Italy.
I hear some people us e the Nikkor Micro 85MM PC lens for portraits. Kind of an odd lens to use for it but the new version looks, the one I purchase looks like a classic.
The old one is as well you can focus as close to 15 inches and has enough shift to be really useful with distant subject. I don't much use the tilt as i am an architectural photographer and that rarely comes into play.
A little cheaper then the 24MM PC but a lot more then the older version by $400.00 or so.
And very good for landscapes.
It is a 2.8 lens as the 24mm is 3.5.
Oh yes I am only going to one location in Japan, a city called Fukuoka known for a collection of modern buildings by an International selection of architects. Tokyo has towat for another trip.
Tomorrow I am off to South Carolina. -

Will the boastful self-promotion never end?
It is both exceptionally boring and extremely bad manners to use this place for this perpetual self-aggrandisement. -
20. Re: I thought sunsets lately were nice
Wade S Zimmerman Oct 27, 2008 8:40 PM (in response to badchess)Then why do you do it!
Everyne here tells where they are going and the exciting things that have happened to them and about the equipment they buy especially you.
And you go much further you boast about how much better your scanner is , how much better your camera is, even your digital camera, how much better your Monitor is both past and present and all the places you have visited and travel o and so on and so on.
What I am doing is actually letting a couple of people her know that even if there are detractors all around you it has no meaning, they are just addressing there own agenda and their own egos and will always be there and will do and say almost anything to discourage you. My message is not to listen and you can just go forward and you will get there regardless of what these poor soles want.
by the way your perpetual self-aggrandizement has been a issue here for a very long time on the forum time.
As someone else pointed out recently you go around accusing people of arrogance when in fact there is no one, except maybe Nick, that is more arrogant then you.
BTE this forum is all about showing and telling about your adventures with photography and what it rings to you and to show your work.
Have a great day!
I have never been to South Carolina.
I here it is very nice. -

If you did that, no-one would object.
What I am objecting to is your perpetual boasting about your commercial contracts and successes and how much money you are making!
In most societies (apart perhaps from NYC!) that is considered to be extremely boorish and totally objectionable. -
22. Re: I thought sunsets lately were nice
Ozpeter Oct 27, 2008 10:49 PM (in response to badchess)Many of those images from the UK were of locations achingly familiar to me. I'm no photo critic but my response to the set was of great disappointment when I got to the last one and there weren't any more. Obviously I lingered on some more than others - perhaps the 'linger factor' is a crude but effective measure of a good photograph? - but I didn't feel moved to rush past any of them.
As for definition of 'landscape' - perhaps anything that portrays an outdoor scene? -

Linda Does this all the time, you do this all the time P Shock use to d this all the time but shut down his private business, Jan Lipka use to do this all the time I am going here to d o a job I ma going here to do anther job, etc. Peter Figen does this every time he gets a big job and thinks it is impressive.
Our Friend in Tazmania used to and sometimes still post projects he just shot and still tells that he did this shoot or that shoot without a flash, I think everyone is interested in how he went about it and how is this working for him professionally.
Linda always wants to know how people have handled themselves on the business end of things.
She has often expressed that to some degree she would like the opportunities like I have and I am pointing out to some people who do not know how it is done how it is done and that it can be an adventure as well as a profit making situation and a rewarding one in other ways and most important and this pertains to people like yourself, you don't have to listen to the nay sayers, just don't listen to them.
Go out and do as many things as you can and accomplish as much as you can.
I am pleased that I came across a group of people like you who decided to black list me and since that event have never done better.
And if someone disagrees with you and make the kind of statements you have been making then it does not make you look to good! You might want to review the things you have write..
I'm off to the airport. BTW one of the people I am working for is not happy about having me shoot this job the other is thrilled. I'll cut the one that is not happy and move on to better things. This is good to let people here know that they do not have to be weary about doing this it is often necessary and it always works out. -

Ann Shelbourne Oct 28, 2008 6:29 AM (in response to badchess)> does this all the time
Wade:
No.
ALL of the people whom you have listed discuss their professional activities in a dispassionate way in an effort to either seek help; discuss aspects and difficulties of a situation; share techniques; or to respond to another member's request for information and help.
You, and ONLY you, are using this Forum to regale others with self-advertising concerning the latest magazine to publish your work, how much you are in demand across the globe and how much money you are earning.
That may be acceptable in private correspondence but it is totally inappropriate behaviour, and more than tiresome, in a public Forum. -

LRK 2 Oct 28, 2008 6:30 AM (in response to badchess)> She has often expressed that to some degree she would like the opportunities like I have
I have? :-)
If so, it would have been many years ago, and something that has completely left my memory. Or perhaps if I expressed this, I might have been reaffirming you and your success. Who knows?
I would not trade my life, or my business, with anyone. It may not be a lucrative as others, and I'm sure far from perfect, but what I do suits me and my way of life. I am pretty happy in the scope of things.
Besides, I would not want the stress of dealing with some of Wade's clients. Most of my clients are really quite wonderful overall. -

Fred Nirque Oct 28, 2008 12:47 PM (in response to badchess)Just for the record and Wade's satisfaction, I make next to no money, even though photography has been my full-time profession for 37 years. I'm not interested in money past having enough to survive on. I'm only interested in photography (and playing the guitar), so if I've offered any comments here they have been in relation to the practice of photography, not the practice of getting rich.
Having been enlightened during the recent public outing to the morals and ethics (or lack thereof) of those to whom the generation of personal wealth is tantamount to everything, I think I'm more than happy to remain a poor photographer for the rest of my days.
I'm off to the forest now (45 minutes down the road, no departure lounge necessary), to spend a day with the trees, birds, insects, ferns, mosses and lichens, no entry fee payable, no parking problems or time-limits imposed.
I reckon being able to do that makes me pretty bloody rich indeed. -

33. Re: I thought sunsets lately were nice
Wade S Zimmerman Oct 28, 2008 5:39 PM (in response to badchess)Advertising in what way, are you crazy?
I don't think there is even one person here that is an architect, how would I be advertising? I strictly work for architects and architectural magazines. Who would i be advertising to here in a forum that has limited reach especially when I have several online publications that publish my images regularly and an agency that specializes in the very subject I photograph.
The only kind of referral I have evber done was to recommend you once to someone and Linda on a few occasions, although I am petty certain on all occasions niothing came of it I di mkae such referrals.
Linda you once not so long afo e-mailed me to tell me how well you were doing and asked me what iwas doing and I told you about my travels and connections I had made and you wrote back saying you wished you had the opportunities that I had.
You mentioned it once before and that was in fact quite a while ago.
If I refer someone I do not usually tell tyhem as if nothing happens tghen they are not disappointed. I also made referrals of Donald to my agency but he did not want to contact them as did Lawrence.
I am not here advertising in anyway, I made it clear when I posted a photograph of a project in the context of an urban setting that no one here even understood what I do and would niot be abler to relate.
There is no way anyone here would ina any way think of me in a way that I was advertising my services to them just for that reason alone.
No je here has ever been able to relate to the work I do in anyway even when they thought they were paying a compliment it was clear that the images did not communicate to them on their level.
Mathias for instance posted a link tohis blog, which looks very interesting and at least one person took offense to it I would not think that such a gesture would be consider self promotion though it goes clearly beyond my postings toward that end.
There would nothing for me to gain by seeking to advertise myself to anyone and I would not know what goal such an effort would have if I did so?
It seems like a pretty crazy statement and accusation.
I did write that it was fun to gain access to places that the rest of the world does not gain access to and I get that from my efforts as a photographer, which is what5 this forum is about.
There happened to be a couple of contributors to the forum who can be successful shooting the way I do and maybe even having more success then I am having and they might find that it is niot as hard as they think it is to make this work for them. -

<shep> Oct 28, 2008 6:10 PM (in response to badchess)>As for definition of 'landscape' - perhaps anything that portrays an outdoor scene?
I meant to mention that earlier. As I said I like a number of the shots, but by *my* definition I don't know how many I'd classify strictly as "landscapes"...as opposed to nice outdoor scenes. (Your definition may vary. :) ) -
37. Re: I thought sunsets lately were nice
Nick Decker Oct 28, 2008 6:11 PM (in response to badchess)Wade, blow it out your windbag.
Other than that, how about you post some links to photos that you've had published in these magazines that hire you. Surely these publications would have web sites to showcase your work? -
38. Re: I thought sunsets lately were nice
(Peter_Figen) Oct 28, 2008 6:47 PM (in response to badchess)Maybe Wade should have his own website to showcase his work. I do.
Not that I need to defend anything, but the last few "examples" I've posted were because this is a Photography forum and I thought that deconstructing the process would be of some use to some of the folks here. Sometimes the stories behind the images are as entertaining as the images themselves. Analyzing the process on my own work helps me understand how to do it better or more efficiently next time. Seeing how others work reminds me that the world is not only how I see it and there might be a useful lesson in there for me. How you go about it generally affects whether the group as a whole thinks of it as crass advertising or sharing knowledge and experience. -
39. Re: I thought sunsets lately were nice
Wade S Zimmerman Oct 28, 2008 8:12 PM (in response to badchess)Nick I post the images that get published many times you have usually said you did not like them.
Putting links to online publications and a website would be advertising, not that it would serve any purpose because there is no one here to advertise to in the first place.
AS I pointed out I do not expect you anyone here to relate and you have I believe commented negatively toward a few. I take it as a compliment that you feel that way as I am communicating to a very specific audience that digs the work.
As I have also mentioned that if you found the work exciting or interesting or worse esthetically provocative, I would wonder at what I was doing wrong. Of course it is a bit dissapointing on one level but on another level a sign of success.
So you have seen my work many times as Ann points out, although some how she thinks that is advertising.
And if you point out how this disagreement about esthetics is only that and should have little effect on what one does professionally then you get accused of arrogance and sel aggradisement!
Interesting hope you guys are constantly fighting with someone.
Now I do not show or display the sites I contribute to so that it does not look like advertisement, but often mention the publications I have had my appear in. As you mentioned you never heard of them.
Which means that if I name them it does little harm as you do not read them or know their importance.
I will tell you this the 85 MM Nikkor 2.8 PC lens is awsome.
