1. Re: PNG Metadata?
Chris Cox Aug 24, 2005 12:28 PM (in response to (MarySue_Kepler))PNG metadata is pretty poorly defined. If you find one app that works with PNG metadata, it probably won't work with other applications.
And I don't think PNG has adopted standards like EXIF or XMP.
And if all you need is transparency, try TIFF (which does have metadata standards and is more widely supported than PNG). -
2. Re: PNG Metadata?
(Linda_VanDuyne) May 31, 2006 9:11 AM (in response to (MarySue_Kepler))So, are you suggesting I convert all of my digital scrapbooking PNG files (and I have thousands of them) to TIFF? It seems rather silly to me, and it will take up a whole bunch of disk space.
BTW, who is responsible for file standards for PNG files? Just curious. -
3. Re: PNG Metadata?
Chris Cox Jun 1, 2006 12:20 PM (in response to (MarySue_Kepler))TIFF uzing ZIP/FLATE compression compresses about as well as PNG.
And TIFF does have better metadata support, and it's supported in more applications.
See http://www.libpng.org/pub/png/ for details on the standards. -

5. Re: PNG Metadata?
(thepals) Oct 4, 2006 8:04 AM (in response to (MarySue_Kepler))I'm only using Bridge for my Album, and would LOVE the ability to tag PNG files in that application. Many of us don't care if the data isn't compatible with other software, it would just be nice to have it in Bridge.
Even the free Picasa can add keywords to PNG files within its own application. Sorting my PNG in Bridge would be a great feature: I have thousands of them as well! -
6. Re: PNG Metadata?
Chris Cox Oct 4, 2006 9:36 AM (in response to (MarySue_Kepler))Unfortunately, PNG has only minimal (and confused) metadata standards.
You can tag it within an application, but the application doesn't have a standard way of putting the metadata into the file.
