MadManChan2000 Nov 25, 2008 6:22 AM (in response to digital gene)Try experimenting ...
Go to the last tab (or press cmd-option-9 / ctrl-alt-9) to visit snapshots. If you have an existing snapshot, use context-click to bring up a popup. -

(Nick_Rains) Nov 25, 2008 4:01 PM (in response to digital gene)Eric, could you be more specific? What's the difference between a Preset and a Snapshot - they seem to do the same thing.

digital gene Nov 25, 2008 4:44 PM (in response to digital gene)Try experimenting ...
I found how to use snapshots but I don't know how to save my image settings to a snapshot?
At this point there are no snapshots listed.
I would like to create a snapshot.
Thanks for any help. -
4. Re: Targeted Adjustment Tool in Camera Raw 5.2
(Nick_Rains) Nov 25, 2008 5:01 PM (in response to digital gene)I can answer that; at the bottom of the Snapshots pane is a small icon, like the New Action icon in Photoshop. Click that and type in a new name - whatever adjustments are currently set will be saved as a Snapshot.
I'd still like to know why this is not the same as a preset.

5. Re: Targeted Adjustment Tool in Camera Raw 5.2
MadManChan2000 Nov 25, 2008 5:03 PM (in response to digital gene)Gene, once you're in the Snapshot tab/pane you will see a listbox which is initially empty. Below that empty listbox are two icons, one that looks like a document and one that looks like a trash can. Click the one on the left (the document one) to create a snapshot. You will be asked to give it a name. Once you do that, all your image settings at that moment are saved into that snapshot. You can then continue to make changes to the image, but if you ever want to go back to the snapshot, just visit the snapshot pane and click on your snapshot (which will appear in the listbox).
As a shortcut, you can press cmd-shift-s on Mac or ctrl-shift-s on Windows to create a new snapshot at any time. -
6. Re: Targeted Adjustment Tool in Camera Raw 5.2
MadManChan2000 Nov 25, 2008 5:04 PM (in response to digital gene)Nick, the reason it's different is because snapshots are image specific and are saved in the XMP metadata with the image. A snapshot also contains ALL the image settings.
A preset can be used across multiple images. It is not image specific. It also can be limited to specific image setting subsets (e.g., just White Balance, or just sharpening & noise reduction-related settings). -

Dennis 1111 Nov 25, 2008 5:09 PM (in response to digital gene)Nick, it might also help you to understand by reading through this thread where the poster was requesting exactly what Snapshots provide:

Ramón G Castañeda Nov 25, 2008 8:53 PM (in response to digital gene)Has anyone found any tips, documentation or tutorials on the title subject of this thread, Targeted Adjustment Tool in Camera Raw 5.2?
I've tried to play with it and experiment, but it's obvious I'm lost.
Perhaps a definition or concise description of the tool might prove helpful.
Thanks in advance. -
10. Re: Targeted Adjustment Tool in Camera Raw 5.2
(Jeff_Schewe) Nov 25, 2008 9:21 PM (in response to digital gene)The keyboard shortcuts are:
Cmd-Option-Shift T switches to parametric curve TAT
Cmd-Option-Shift H switches to Hue TAT
Cmd-Option-Shift S switches to Saturation TAT
Cmd-Option-Shift L switches to Luminance TAT
Cmd-Option-Shift G switches to Grayscale mixer TAT
If youre on Windows, replace Cmd with Control and Option with Alt.
Click on the TAT tool and unless you are specifically got the HSL/Grayscale panel open, the default TAT will be Parametric Curves. Click in an area in the image with TAT the active tool and whatever the targets tonality will go up/down depending on whether you move the morse up/down.
Switch to HSL panel and the target will be whatever sub-panel is active: Hue, Saturation or Lightness. The TAT works the same what in HSL, click in the image and drag up/down to adjust the targeted color.
Other than that, it's practice...
Oh, and it'll be covered in depth in RWCRCS4 (which is why it's late...so i could be sure of including the Camera Raw 5.2 update throughout the book). -

I was most certainly hoping that would be the case. :) Hope there will be a way to use the cursor rather than having to remember keyboard shortcuts, which I prefer not to use if at all possible. -
12. Re: Targeted Adjustment Tool in Camera Raw 5.2
Ramón G Castañeda Nov 25, 2008 10:44 PM (in response to digital gene)Aaaaaaah! Now it makes sense. I had been trying to draw selections and perform various dances with the tool's icon. :/
I also see one can indeed use the mouse and skip the shortcuts. :)
Not as spectacular as the local adjustments brush, but still very impressive and useful.
Eagerly looking forward to the book. -

Ramón G Castañeda Nov 26, 2008 12:00 AM (in response to digital gene)Another pleasant surprise. The Photoshop help/resources file has been updated to include the Targeted Adjustment Tool (TAT) already. -
14. Re: Targeted Adjustment Tool in Camera Raw 5.2
Yammer Nov 26, 2008 3:57 AM (in response to digital gene)I tried the Snapshot tool once, so far:
I opened a photo I had previously developed. I converted to grayscale, and mucked about with the exposure, detail and tone curve sliders for 5 minutes. When I got it how I liked it, I clicked on the new document icon and gave the snapshot a name. It appeared in the list. Good stuff.
Then I alt-clicked Open Image (Open Copy), so I wouldn't overwrite my original colour version, and finished it off in Photoshop.
I went back to the image afterwards, and was alarmed to see that the B&W conversion snapshot had disappeared. Damn :-(
I'm guessing this is by design. Presumably snapshots are only saved if you click Open Image or Done? -

John Joslin Nov 26, 2008 3:58 AM (in response to digital gene)> The Photoshop help/resources file has been updated
That is a potent argument for Adobe's decision to move to an on-line version of Help as the Photoshop default.
(In case you hadn't noticed, people have been complaining.) -

Thomas Knoll Nov 26, 2008 5:38 AM (in response to digital gene)>I'm guessing this is by design. Presumably snapshots are only saved if you click Open Image or Done?
Yes. -
17. Re: Targeted Adjustment Tool in Camera Raw 5.2
(Jeff_Schewe) Nov 26, 2008 8:43 AM (in response to digital gene)One of the benefits of having snapshots is you won't have to do the option/open copy nearly as much anymore because if you save your snapshots, you can always come back to the individual set of parameters very easily...
And to take Thomas' point further, doing an option/open copy is pretty much the same as cancel in terms of any settings adjustments (including snapshots). It implies that you want NOTHING from that open session stored or remembered. This impacts image settings and preferences as well. The option/open copy was really a work around from having to open a version and wanting to keep the old settings in the metadata. Now you really don't have to do that anymore. -
18. Re: Targeted Adjustment Tool in Camera Raw 5.2
Yammer Nov 26, 2008 9:08 AM (in response to digital gene)So, basically, if I want to mess about with different developing treatments, stage one is save a snapshot of the existing parameters, and the final action is to click Open Image or Done. -

20. Re: Targeted Adjustment Tool in Camera Raw 5.2
MadManChan2000 Nov 26, 2008 9:49 AM (in response to digital gene)And remember, Keith, you can use Cmd-Shift-S (on Mac) or Ctrl-Shift-S (on Windows) to create a snapshot at any time, regardless of which pane you're in or which tool you're working with. So it's pretty easy to add snapshots as you go. You do need to visit the snapshot pane (Cmd-Option-9 or Ctrl-Alt-9) to switch between them. -

22. Re: Targeted Adjustment Tool in Camera Raw 5.2
(Nick_Rains) Nov 26, 2008 2:38 PM (in response to digital gene)OK, to tease this out a bit further; if there are a series of snapshots saved within a DNG file which one does the embedded preview reflect? Same with Bridge, which snapshot does the thumbnail reflect? I'd assume the most recent one but I'd like to be sure.
It would be cool if all the snapshots versions were shown as a kind of stack though...

24. Re: Targeted Adjustment Tool in Camera Raw 5.2
(Nick_Rains) Nov 26, 2008 11:07 PM (in response to digital gene)On the subject of Presets, is it true that none of the local adjustment tools, like Grad Filter, are available to be saved as presets? I can do this in LR2.1 but ACR5.2 seems to have no equivalent.
Thanks

25. Re: Targeted Adjustment Tool in Camera Raw 5.2
MadManChan2000 Nov 27, 2008 8:02 AM (in response to digital gene)Actually, you can. While you're using a local adjustment tool, check the Flyout menu. -
26. Re: Targeted Adjustment Tool in Camera Raw 5.2
(Nick_Rains) Nov 27, 2008 5:30 PM (in response to digital gene)OK I see that but it's not really what I meant. I want to be able to apply the whole Grad effect, as part of a Preset, to a selection of flies. I can do this in LR2.1 but not ACR5.2.
There seems to be no way to apply the Adjustment Tools to multiple files as a saved Preset although it seems you can copy and paste all the Local Adjustments from one file to a selection in Bridge. The ACR dialog where you save a preset is lacking the Local Adjustment checkbox that is in the Copy Settings dialog in Bridge (and LR). Is this an oversight?

27. Re: Targeted Adjustment Tool in Camera Raw 5.2
(Nick_Rains) Nov 27, 2008 5:34 PM (in response to digital gene)Furthermore, the Paste Camera RAW Settings dialog in Bridge is not sticky - it forgets the last selection and always comes up with Custom Subset, not the subset previously chosen. That's kinda annoying.
