1. Re: should I immediately upgrade XP to Vista 64 Ultimate on new Dell Precision
Ian C. Matthew Oct 29, 2008 4:29 AM (in response to KarenSC)Are the Vista disks 'raw' install DVD's or are they recovery ones? Recovery disks may be the easier install in some ways, but then its not as though vista is hard to install anyway. I much prefer raw Windows install disks as you do not get junkware installed.
The best way to proceed would be to completely wipe the main hard drive and install Windows from scratch. Then install in this order: your drivers, AV / Anti-Spyware, then your main apps such as Office, CS3, CS4 and so on.

BobLevine Oct 29, 2008 4:38 AM (in response to KarenSC)Call Dell and see if they'll ship it with Vista 64 installed instead. If
not (outlet?) then blow it out and install Vista. Dell's O/S disks are
real install disks, not recovery disks so you'll get a nice clean
installation.
Under no circumstances should you do an in place upgrade from XP to Vista.

3. Re: should I immediately upgrade XP to Vista 64 Ultimate on new Dell Precision
(Derrick_Moore) Oct 29, 2008 5:25 AM (in response to KarenSC)Make sure it is Vista 64. On my work machine I also got the XP downgrade
rights but they would not let me have Vista 64, only Vista 32. I talked to a
customer rep and the supervisor but they said I would have to get XP64 with
the downgrade rights to have the Vista 64 disc. -

KarenSC Oct 29, 2008 3:03 PM (in response to KarenSC)Thanks. I have been assured it's Vista 64 Ultimate downgraded to XP 64 - but Ian's post is valid. I believe I have a choice of using recovery or using the original discs. I will check first. Thank you.
