CharlesBelov Nov 20, 2008 10:17 AM (in response to CharlesBelov)No, it dosen't behave any better. A freshly-generated Normal.dot contines to ask me if I want to save changes to Normal.dot every time I close Word.

P Spier Nov 20, 2008 4:02 PM (in response to CharlesBelov)Sorry to hear that. I don't have anything else to offer at the moment, though I find it very hard to believe it's CS4 causing the problem. Anything else new about the system? -
4. Re: Install of CS4 causes Word to prompt on close of Windows
CharlesBelov Mar 20, 2011 7:52 AM (in response to CharlesBelov)Well, I did upgrade Java, but I doubt that's it.
So I uninstalled Acrobat 9 and Contribute CS4.
Opened Word. Exited Word. No dialog box.
Reinstalled Acrobat 9.
Opened Word. Exited Word. Problem has returned.
So I pretty much have it pinned to Acrobat 9.

Kwan Parker Nov 21, 2008 8:53 AM (in response to CharlesBelov)From within Word, run the "Detect and Repair" program: click Help --> Detect and Repair.
You will need your installation Office or Word CDs to complete the repair process.
In the past when Normal.dot made a pest of itself as it is doing for you, this option set things right again.
May it do the same for you. -

Kwan Parker Nov 21, 2008 1:08 PM (in response to CharlesBelov)That is disappointing for you, I know.
But, if it is of any help in knowing, I have CS4 Master Collection installed on an XPS 400 Windows XP Professional SP3 with MS Office 2003 also installed. Have encountered no problems with Word 2003's normal.dot on closing the application.
Which is why I thought my suggestopm might have worked.
Good luck!

CharlesBelov Nov 21, 2008 1:39 PM (in response to CharlesBelov)Do you have Word set to prompt if the Normal template changes? (I'm guessing you do, since you previously saw this behavior, but it's in Tools > Options > Save tab)
and
Have you hidden the Acrobat toolbar? (I have.) -
9. Re: Install of CS4 causes Word to prompt on close of Windows
Kwan Parker Nov 21, 2008 3:18 PM (in response to CharlesBelov)] Do you have Word set to prompt if the Normal template changes?
Yes.
] Have you hidden the Acrobat toolbar?
Yes and no. The "yes" being I have hidden it in the recent past but it (and other hidden menu options) reappear on their own. This is a recurring event which existed before installing CS4.
The "no" being it was on when I read your message and have now hidden it to see if it will duplicate your problem with my system. Will let you know after a day or so of opening and closing Word, even if the problem does not duplicate for me.
Best,

10. Re: Install of CS4 causes Word to prompt on close of Windows
Kwan Parker Nov 21, 2008 6:21 PM (in response to CharlesBelov)Wael, Charles;
I duplicated your problem, which is now my problem.
Funny thing though. It did not show up when I opened, edited and saved Word files about a dozen times directly through the Word application.
It first appeared in Outlook after I read and replied to a message. I use Word as my editor. When I closed that Outlook / Word file, voila, up popped your (and my) nag to save or cancel changes to normal.dot.
In my case, the culprit is how Word deals with hiding Pdfmaker 9.
The remaining instances on the Acrobat dropdown menu bar were unaffected, because I did not try to hide them.
More when I more time . . .
Appears not to be a really new problem, judging from quick Google searches.

(Jesse_Witt) Jan 7, 2009 9:04 AM (in response to CharlesBelov)I just installed CS4 and am having the exact same issue. I do not want to disable the prompting function, as I usually want Normal.dot to remain unchanged. Have you found any solution? -

(Mark_A_Curtis) Jan 14, 2009 2:25 PM (in response to CharlesBelov)I just installed Adobe Acrobat 9 Professional on a Windows XP computer. I am running Microsoft Office 2003. When I exit Microsoft Word, I am prompted each time with a message that Normal.dot has been changed, and would I like to save it.
I've also verified that the Acrobat 9 Pro PDFMaker COM-Addin is causing the problems. When I disable the addin, Word doesn't prompt me to save Normal.dot when exiting. However, as I would like to use the PDFMaker option, Adobe needs to fix this problem.

17. Re: Install of CS4 causes Word to prompt on close of Windows
(Mark_A_Curtis) Jan 19, 2009 10:50 AM (in response to CharlesBelov)I also submitted a bug report.
I tried all the suggestions in the Microsoft knowledgebase document.
The first suggestion to turn off the prompt when the normal.dot template has changed, and to automatically save the template, does get rid of the prompt. But, in my opinion, it isn't a good thing to automatically save changes to the normal.dot template, with no prompting (e.g., there could be a virus).
I individually loaded all the Microsoft Word 2003 addins and isolated the problem to the Adobe Acrobat PDFMaker COM addin. -

(MikeK703) Mar 30, 2009 10:29 AM (in response to CharlesBelov)I have \the same problem with Acrobat 9.1 and have determined that the cause of it is that I am not logged into my computer as an administrator. When somebody logs in as an administrator, the problem no longer exists. When not logged in as an administrator the pdf dot file goes into a temporary directory when Word is opened and deletes itself when Word is closed. I've found no work-around other than de-selecting the ask if template is changed option and as you pointed out that's a safety feature. -

24. Re: Install of CS4 causes Word to prompt on close of Windows
jhwitt May 12, 2009 8:29 AM (in response to CharlesBelov)I spent a while on the phone with Adobe about this, and they could not resolve it. We found that disabling PDFMaker by turning off macros one by one would solve the issue, but the tech did not know how to permanently disable PDFMaker.
I did discover by accident, however, that if you move or rename the Program Files/Adobe/Acrobat 9.0/PDFMaker/Office folder, enable macros in Word, abort the installation when it tries to reinstall PDFMaker, and then close Word, Word will stop trying to launch PDFMaker even with macros enabled.

25. Re: Install of CS4 causes Word to prompt on close of Windows
Mike Dallwitz May 12, 2009 6:25 PM (in response to jhwitt)I have the same problem.
I think the basic purpose of the Word prompt is not to protect against viruses, but to protect against saving temporary, and perhaps accidental, changes made by the user. I find it useful, and I don't want to disable it.
I use PDFMaker, so I don't want to disable it either. However, it can be disabled (in Windows XP) by changing the value of LoadBehavior in the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins\PDFMaker.OfficeAddin from 3 to 0. For information about LoadBehavior values, see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb386106.aspx.
The PDFMaker addin is unusual (unique?) in that it is loaded from a temporary copy of the file. An unusual feature of my OS setup is that my temporary files are on another partition, not in the default location in the system partition. (In Vista, even basic MS applications such as IE fail if you do this.) I wonder if other users experiencing this problem have the same setup.

26. Re: Install of CS4 causes Word to prompt on close of Windows
Chupo_cro Jul 17, 2009 4:59 AM (in response to CharlesBelov)The problems with Adobe&Office toolbars and normal.dot are known for years. I remember an issue when one version of Acrobat didn't allow to save normal.dot (it was a few years ago, documented on many places easily found with Google). Problems with reappearing tollbars are still here since CS3:
http://www.justskins.com/forums/annoying-toolbar-in-excel-and-word-126058.html
Hard to believe, but exactly the same problem still exists in CS4!! Contribute toolbar is reappearing and besides occupies a whole new row in the toolbar space. It's shame that the solution to disable the annoying Contribute toolbar isn't clearly displayed on the Adobe's official site but has to be found somewhere else:
http://www.endnote.com/support/faqs/CWYW/faq11.asp
(search for: 'To remove the Contribute 4 plugin')

27. Re: Install of CS4 causes Word to prompt on close of Windows
CharlesBelov Jul 17, 2009 1:58 PM (in response to Chupo_cro)Actually, I removed the Contribute plugin a long time ago. It's the Acrobat plugin that is causing the problem, and I need to not disable it because I regularly use it.

28. Re: Install of CS4 causes Word to prompt on close of Windows
Mike Dallwitz Jul 17, 2009 5:24 PM (in response to CharlesBelov)I corresponded with Customer Care about this problem for a month. The last contact was 5 weeks ago, but the case is still open.
Changing the location for temporary files to the default (see my suggestion above) didn't fix the problem. However, I still wonder whether the problem is related to the loading of the template from a temporary file - thereby changing normal.dot. If I choose 'Tools > Templates and Add-ins', a global template 'PDFMCustom.dot' is shown, and if I select this, its full path is shown (near the bottom of the dialog) as my temporary folder. Do users who don't have this problem see the same thing?

SWFisherman Oct 22, 2009 8:53 AM (in response to Mike Dallwitz)This is what worked for me, found it on a different website, although he said he found it here:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Fix
I searched high and low on Google and found the answer on Adobe’s forum explaining the fix:
- Edit Registry (goto Start then Run & type regedit, press enter)
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins\PDFMOutlook.PDFMOutlook
- Change the LoadBehavior value from 3 to 2
- Restart
It worked.
Whew! Thanks Google and thank you itmastera.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am using XP SP3 w/ Office 2003 & CS4 Master Suite.
This fix will took out the Contribute toolbar in Word & Outlook, but I now have a menu for contribute in word that has the same tools that were in the toolbar i used to have.
I can now highlight & use the scroll bars in Word & Outlook messages (Word is the editor), double click Word files to open them, & I never get the dialog box asking me to save Normal.dot or PDFMCustom.dot. I can also still use the Acrobat tools in Word to convert .doc to .pdf.

CharlesBelov Mar 20, 2011 7:53 AM (in response to SWFisherman)Thank you for your suggestion. Alas, this is throwing out the baby with the bathwater, as I no longer have an Adobe PDF menu in Word after doing this procedure. I don't want to use the PDF printer, I want to use the Adobe PDF Create PDF feature, which provides for Accessibility tagging.
Hope this helps,

31. Re: Install of CS4 causes Word to prompt on close of Windows
SWFisherman Oct 22, 2009 1:39 PM (in response to CharlesBelov)What a pain. I guess it can be different for everyone as I have found out searching the internet. I still have the Adobe PDF menu in Word after doing this.
What is odd though is I had two Adobe PDF menu's in Word before I edited the registry, after I did the edit the Contribute menu took the place of the other PDF menu (the extra PDF menu was blank before the edit) & contained all 3 options that the Contribute toolbar had before the edit. I wouldn't have thought editing the Outlook registry values would have anything to do with all these Word menus either.
Good Luck, telling from the age of this thread you are going to need it.

SisterAnnex Mar 20, 2011 7:54 AM (in response to CharlesBelov)Can I just bump this again, does anyone know of any fixes from Adobe for this??
We are just about to purchase Web Premium on a site license and at just over £5k its a big expense if all i am going to be doing is running around trying to fix issues with it :/
Anyways, if anyone does have any idea about any fixes that can be applied (other than the ones above which so far have not been helpful in my situation)
Also, just as an aside does anyone know if this occurs with Office 2007??
Many Thanks

33. Re: Install of CS4 causes Word to prompt on close of Windows
Mike Dallwitz Nov 17, 2009 5:18 AM (in response to SisterAnnex)As I hadn't heard from Adobe about this problem since June, I checked the customer support site, and found that the case had been marked "withdrawn". I opened another case asking the reason for this, and have had no reply (3 weeks have elapsed).
I guess that this problem is not common enough to be considered worth fixing.

mh505 Mar 20, 2011 7:44 AM (in response to Mike Dallwitz)For whatever it's worth - I see that this post is very old so someone else might have found a solution
- it looks for (3 hours after tweak, and no more problem - that I have found the solution by sheer serendipity.
Namely to install the PDFMCustom.dot in the MS Office startup folder so that now the add-in appears twice in Word.
If someone is still reading this post, let me know if you can replicate this
-
36. Re: Install of CS4 causes Word to prompt on close of Windows
CharlesBelov Mar 28, 2011 5:38 PM (in response to mh505)I'm not getting the same results but then again I'm not sure I'm following your instructions.
The only STARTUP folder I have in the path C:\Documents and Settings\[user name]\Application Data\Microsoft is the path C:\Documents and Settings\[user name]\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP.
C:\Documents and Settings\[user name]\Application Data\Microsoft\Office does not have a folder STARTUP. Are you suggesting I create such a folder and put PDFMCustom.dot there?
Copying or moving the file PDFMCustom.dot in C:\Documents and Settings\[user name]\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP does not achieve the desired result.
I tested by quitting Word, doing the move or copy above, and relaunching Word and closing it. I still get the message.
I also tried copying it to the path C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Office11\STARTUP to no avail.
If you meant something else by "install" or meant a different location, please clarify.

39. Re: Install of CS4 causes Word to prompt on close of Windows
Kenob020 Jun 24, 2011 10:24 AM (in response to mh505)I seem to have solved the problem! I'm using Word 2003 in XP but I assume it should work for others.
I created a new macro in Word named AutoClose containing the following:
Sub AutoClose()
NormalTemplate.Saved = True
End SubI did not assign the macro to a toolbar - it just saves into normal.dot.
This then stops the prompt to save the Normal template when Word is closed. However, first you have to save normal.dot otherwise the macro will be lost. To do that I added a SaveAll button to a toolbar (using Tools > Customize > Commands > File and dragged Save All to the toolbar) then clicked the new button to save normal.dot before closing Word.
Note that it doesn't matter whether "Prompt to save Normal template" is checked or not in Tools > Options > Save - it doesn't prompt either way.
I then made normal.dot read-only to ensure that it was not changed inadvertently in the future (for example to prevent any macro viruses creeping in).
Now if you ever want to re-save normal.dot (for example if you add a new macro) then click on the SaveAll button and save normal.dot with a different name (can't save as normal.dot since it's read-only) then rename back to normal.dot. In XP normal.dot resides in C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\).
